for extra warmth (instead of the flannelette sheets) I use fleecy blankets. Really toasty. Usually the kiddy themed ones (Peppa etc) fit nicely on a single bed.

Finally most of our free wood have now been cut by OH and friends' son. Some of it was already dry ready to be used as soon as it gets colder. The rest will need a few months still to dry. We also have got 5 large containers with kindlings in the garage.

Does anyone know of a good draught excluder for the windows that can easily be removed when we are moving out from this rented property?

    Thanks

if the gap isn't too bad that foam draught excluder strip you get for doors works ok, i even had one wooden frame that was quite wide at one end so i just put a few strips of it in, peels right off, just use a butter knife to gently tuck it in place

I've done my list last night, lots of jobs - apple tree needs a good pruning this year as does the prunus at the front. I also want to clear out my shed.

For spends, I need a new coat - and poss DD, will have to try on what she has, and check with MIL as she usually has a stash of kiddie clothes for us. Going up there today so might have DD try on before we go.

I washed my thermal curtains for the front and back doors, plus kitchen windows before putting them away, so they should just go back up on the rails in a month or so.

I rolled the thermostat up to 17 yesterday (just been on frost stat for months) and when we got in at 5pm the radiators felt a little warm. I was struggling to get our holiday washing dry, so this will help a little. Can't believe it actually flicked on though! It's August!

My fridge freezer needs defrosting, but I might leave it a little while - its full. But I have a second freezer in the garage, currently switched off, but I usually start filling it towards the end of September. So I can move stuff over before defrosting the other.

Last year our market was selling magic gloves for kids for £1 and I'm sure DDs were too big, so they must be stashed somewhere... DS also had some ski-type mitts from the year before which were fab for playing in snow, so might find some of those for both. And me :D

These are the blankets I bought last autumn. Lovely & big enough to put over a double bed too. Really toasty whilst watching Downton Abbey!

yes re the geese flying south, very early this year.

I also have aches after helping to shift a tonne of pellets but a nice sight all stacked and ready. Hope we don`t have to break into it too soon

I honestly feel like hibernating already, very weird, my body has gone into slow down mode and this is not like me. I started doing a bit of winter tidying already and my freezers are so full, I have gone back to dehydrating green beans and courgettes, which I wasn`t going to do this year. Nature has been incredibly bountiful this year, masses of produce
  • Having the winter fuel safely gathered in and in store gives such a nice feeling doesn't it Kittie? I too have been non stop dehydrating this past week, I'm amazed at how much bulk everything loses, it's so much easier to store the dehydrated produce isn't it? Such a different year to last year, we have bumper crops of tomatoes, courgettes and beans and I'm processing every scrap of produce I can, no waste this year, Smashing, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Hi, new to this thread but have been lurking on and off for a while.
I have just moved house so will have to be more organised this winter as no shops I could really get to if the weather is as bad as we've had the last couple of years.

    GOT.
    Shoe grips
    Wellies
Old carpet for wheels when get stuck
    Plenty of blankets and duvets
Duvet for car if get stuck
    2 clothes airers
    Door snake

    NEED
    Shovel
    Dried /tinned food stocks
    Frozen veg
    Bread and butter for freezer
    Make roast potatoes for freezer
    Candles and matches/lighters
    Extra bulbs
    Extra fuses for fuse box
    Car de-ice stuff

The loft door has a slight gap, I don't need to be up there so was just going to tape it up, unless anyone has a better idea.

I now have a conservatory which i'm guessing will be like a fridge, I was going to get a fan heater for this. I don't think they are very good on the energy consumption front (?) but no idea if conservatories get damp so thought it would be dry as well as instant heat? This is likely where I will put my washing I think. Having read some posts have just hunted out a curtain pole that I can put across the outside doors and hang a curtain so maybe that will help a bit.

This house has double glazing so i'm guessing there shouldn't be too much of a draught problem, but time will tell.

Really good thread, but I do this on my phone as no computer as yet so couldn't possibly read all the pages.!!

It's too difficult on a phone to partake and keep track of more than a few threads, but I will certainly still be lurking. Some brilliant ideas....i have a list made now, very organised for me.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
