Do check AA before you buy.
Slightly different but my mum called out the RAC because she thought she was covered using her TESCO vouchers. She buys the whole rescue/recovery/home start/etc every year. Anyway because she had just moved house she hadn't sent back the confirmation so she wasn't covered. On the spot the RAC would only let her join for the 'basic' membership which does not include forward travel and only the 'local' garage. Anyway, he got her started so it didn't matter too much for her.
OP, before you buy check you are able to buy and use the package you need

(ps - TESCO were very understanding and refunded all the vouchers back on to her card)

aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter

Just tell the breakdown service that you broke down late last night and you got a lift home because you didnt realise that the garage worked so late, thats how id explain why the car was cold.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.

Have a ring round your mates - you will find someone with personal RAC/AA membership which covers them for any car they are in (don't have to be the driver even) who can get a callout from them and meet you at the car to show their membership.

yeah i do have a friend who lives about 4 miles from the car who has the complete aa cover becuase she does so much driving for work. unfortunately she is out tonight but has just phoned to say she may be able to help me tomorrow but to be honest i feel a bit bad with having to drag her out to me and then we could be waiting hours.

i think itll prob be a case of lesson learnt, going to get aa cover in a minute and have put an ad on my face book asking if anyone has a tow bar or recovry vehicle. one friend says her dad has so am waiting for her to get hold of him and let me know how much itll cost.

thankyou so much for your advice. i have read all the policy docs and i think i understand all of it. i have noticed my vehicle isnt covered with just roadside cover as its over 10 year old but it is covered if i take out roadside with something else like home start, relay etc

If you do the trick of using a mate as an alleged passenger in the car and call their cover, make sure you have a story straight as to why the car is stone cold (it will be obvious to the dude that comes out that the car hasn't packed up in the last hour and he may be a nuisance)

I would have thought the garage you were due to take the car to wouldn't have a problem collecting the car tomorrow, after all there will be some more work for them than just changing an ABS sensor, which would take all of 10 mins.

unfortunately the garage i use doesnt have a way of recovering the vehicle. i have called them before about a prob with my car starting and they told me to get the aa or a recovery truck.

had to get a recovery truck which cost £30 to get from my house to them which was all of 1 mile.

should have learnt my lesson then about not having cover, have definately learnt it this time round

Go for personal cover, not vehicle cover, if you have a car that is 10+ years old.

As for dragging a friend out. You'll also have a working car with you, so take her for a coffee or a meal nearby or something while you wait for the tow truck.

It may as well be if neither of you have done it before. Need at least one of you to have had previous experience before attempting this.
