MEDIA PLAYER - Sound Files (Help)

Hi there,
I'm looking for a bit of help regarding a problem that I'm experiencing trying to open a sound file (I'm not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes down to techno issues, so apologies in advance if my query comes across as quite dumb).
I receive these files on a regular basis, and have never experienced any difficulties; I just usually click on the file, and it will usually open automatically in Media Player, however, on this occassion, I keep receiving an error message stating the extension is an (AMR) extension, and Media Player is unable to open it. Is there anything that I can do to convert the file, or is there a safe converter available on-line that would do the job?
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Adaptive Multi-Rate audio file. Unusual. Apparently, VLC will open it. See here.0

Many thanks for your help, it's greatly appreciated.
All best wishes

Just a note to say VLC will open anything and everything so I would urge everyone has it as their default player, much better than any other. It can also do stuff like remove subtitles which is awesome!0
