Cat being protective of litter tray

Hi for about a month whenever I have been doing my cats litter tray he has been hissing at me but yesterday he atually atacked me. my arm and hand are scratched to bits and I am really upset and frightened by the whole thing.Havent even tryed to go near it yet today, waiting on my son to come in from collage so he came lock him in his room while i do it, has anyone else had this problem and do you know why he is doing it and what I can do about it , thanks
