Child Tax credits written off

Seven years ago i was sent £7000 for tax credits which i knew was wrong, informed the tax office but never received any reply.. the money got spent !
So ever since every year my i have not received any credits just a reduction on the amount we were sent, which i excepted, till the rules changed !
We were sent a demand for £3500 for the balance outstanding, on advice i saw on this site i sent the form in disputing the case.
Yesterday i was told that i did not have to pay outstanding amount as it was their mistake and would also receive all the tax credits for the pass 7 years.
Thanks for the advice on this forum.
