So in essence you are looking for a gaming device?

I suppose your options might be:
    • Handheld console, most obvious being the Nintendo range - seems age appropriate.
    • Android based device, all the best games are released for Apple and Android based devices so there is no real need to lock yourself into Apple.

So for example, I just bought a Nexus 7 tablet for less than the price of an iPod touch. Given the choice I would chose the N7 again and again. I'm downloading the "free app of the day" from the Amazon app store each day (which has mostly been kiddies games so far!).

The N7 is the premium budget tablet of the day, you can also get the new Kindle Fire, or one of the many cheaper non-branded imports on Amazon (but be aware these can be limited - eg no access to the Google App store).

    I would get a Nexus 7 (£159).
  • Why not buy a 2nd hand ipod touch,if you buy a handheld console(Gameboy or Nintendo DS) the games for them are alot more expensive than games from itunes & there are lots of free games on itunes.

The Nexus is suited for creative things like drawing/painting, the iPod Touch for quickfire games. You might want to avoid connecting it to your WiFi all the time, and hide the button to connect it.
