It's a '53 VW Passat and has been pretty reliable since I bought it 4 years ago; pretty high mileage (180k) but has been serviced pretty regularly (not quite to VW spec, but almost), new cam belt last winter. ......
You don't sound like a DIY car repairer so assuming you paid a garage to fit the cam belt I'd have thought it was still under guarantee0 -
Ideally you would source a replacement engine (write off perhaps) and Haynes in hand, take a leisurely weekend with a hired crane to rejuvenate the banger. However as you haven't attempted to fix the window, I guess that low cost solution is out and I'd ebay it and hope for the best. Remember with 180k under its belt, the rest of it is pretty much worn out too.
Not necessarily. The shocks will have been changed at some time, as will have the wheelbearings and brakes. The clutch can be changed with the engine.
Unless bushes are making a noise, they're OK too.0 -

how do you know all this?
is your Ouija board plugged in0 -
Sounds like endgame.
Tow it home. Stick it up for sale, be honest about the faults, and there'll be a trader or breaker out there will probably give you a good enough price to make youYes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?0 -
Yeah, at 180k the car basically has no value unless it's running. Big ticket items like a new engine means it's game over for that car.
Hit gumtree and auto trader and local adverts. If you're not picky there are many fine cars out there for £1,000 or less. And you'll get £200 scrap for the passat.
Not sure I'd be willing to pay the garage that's broken my car whilst it's in their care though.....0 -
Ignore anyone that has used the words £200 or 'scrap', and refer to my original comment regarding ebay.
If it doesn't go for at least double it's raw scrap metal value I'll eat my hat.0 -
Thanks all for your comments; I hadn't thought about the cam belt, but it was just supposition that this was what caused the valve to drop and caused the engine damage. Colin, we did think about replacement engine, but it would have been the garage fitting it - I'm not even good for an oil change! She has been sold for just over double what the scrappy offered, so am making do with that and we're getting by for a short while on being a one car family - I need quite a reliable car for work usually but most of my current trips are by train (which work pays for!) so am coping for now.
Thank you!0
