    Exclamation mark in this case used to mark a crescendo such as is found at the end of a hymn - using it to mean nudge wink is far more recent.

    Well !!!! my old Mum used to 'donkey stone' the step but I can't imagine for one moment she did anything else She was a God-fearing tiny little Scots Presbyterian who did actually sing hymns while she worked her favorite being 'Oh God our help in ages past' :):):)
