Got my payslip today, £990 gross pay, £500 PAYE TAX!!!!!!! HELP!!!

Hi, I need some help urgently.

I got my payslip today, I got paid £991.86 gross and net pay is £455.74. TOTAL DEDUCTIONS £536.12!!!!!!!!!

They have taken £42 72for NI and £493.40 for PAYE tax. My rax code has been changed from 810L to 380T. I rang up my payroll department and they said they normally query all big tax payments if more than 50% of your gross pay has been taken, apparently mine was 49.8% or something, it just fell short so they did not query it with inland rev and let them take out that much. Can someone verify this for me? Is NI classed as tax aswell cause if it is, it's obvious they took more than 50% so why wasn't it queried? Or are they right and it is just under 50%?

So I rang inland rev, they told me I am on the wrong code and should be on 810L and it changed because they think I am on JSA, which I obviously am not. They told me it will take a few days to change to 810L and I will get a refund in my next payslip. NEXT PAYSLIP?!?!?!?!? I told them I have bills to pay, I can't wait for a £500 refund until next month, they said to ring my employer. I rang my payroll office again and told them what inland rev said, they said they won't get new tax codes until the following monday which I presume he meant 8th oct!!!!!! And I told him can I get a refund them, he said no, I will have to wait until next payslip in oct which means I won't get that £500 until 31st OCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How is this fair? How am I meant to pay my bills? This isn't my mistake, they are gonna make me wait 35 days to get a refund on that £500? I am gonna be in some serious !!!! now without that money :(:(

Can they do this? :(

  • Sadly, yes. HMRC are answerable to nobody. Would your employer be prepared to give you an advance on your wages?
  • Sorry I cant answer re the tax, but was going to suggest you ask your bank if you could have a overdraft this month that you can repay next month ??

Is this your first pay ? If not ask for an advance from your employer. My last employer would do this in such circumstances.

I've been working there for a year. This happened to me begining of this year aswell and they made me wait a month for a refund. It's a joke.

Make a formal complaint in writing to HMRC (particularly if this has happened twice), detailing the cost to you of their error.
  • Posts like yours OP, make me soooo angry!  Not with you, but with the Inland Revenue, who appear to employ incompetent morons to carry out these tasks.

I know a couple of years ago my DH had 27 Notices of Coding in about 6 weeks, but as you rightly say, you have bills to pay. It's nigh impossible to talk to the same person twice at the IR, but I would recommend you try to phone them and ask to speak to a supervisor, explaining your plight.

I truly wish you all the best in getting this nightmare sorted.

    xx
  • not alot you can do OP,as above can you explain to bank and get an od?or spend on a cc that you can repay next monthe, failing that borrow from family?
  • HMRC haven't yet cracked customer service and aren't geared up to deal with the 'little people' - they have a very authoritarian and defensive culture in my experience.

This is one of the examples of when your MP is best placed to take action. HMRC have an MP 'hotline' for complaints and this is the most effective route to get issues resolved swiftly. You can find your MP here if you aren't sure http://www.theyworkforyou.com/
