car insurance: what to do after not owning a car for 3 years

Hi,

For the past 3 years my wife and I have been sharing a single car. The car is in my name as is the insurance, with my wife as a second driver. I have 6 years' no claim and hence don't pay very much for my insurance.

With a second baby on the way, we will now reluctantly have to purchase a second car. I understand that I can't use my years of no claims on two cars at the same time, hence our second car will have to be insured under her name, corret? My wife had 6-7 years without a claim herself until we got rid of her car 3-4 years ago. Does she now have to start from scratch again or is there any way that her "no claims years" can be used to get a lower quote now?

Thanks.

  • NCD generally will be accepted for up to 2 years so as you say your old NCD is of no use.

The new car can be insured in either name, if your wife will be the main driver it makes sense to put it in her name but it isnt compulsory as long as the main driver is correctly declared.

Speak to your existing insurers first, they may have a NCD mirroring scheme for these types of circumstances (or ND NCD).

Then simply check the aggregators etc saying you have no claims but no NCD either and see what comes back. Some insurers apply an introductory discount but this will happen automatically and the prices you see will include it.

check the exact date of her last ncd proof.

If it is within 3 years you can still use it with cis insurance.
  • Thanks but we got rid of my wife's car (our second car) just over 4 years ago. I'll search for a cheap quote based on 0 years NCD. Bit of a shame as she's definitely low risk.

Although there is no ncd, she could try and see if a local broker (not swinton) can get her an introductory discount to reflect her claim free driving experience.
  • Check your own insurers by phoning them, a few still do deals for bringing your new second car to them (though less than there used to be)

We were in same situation...Saga gave a large discount for first premium on new insurance with no NCD on 2nd car (I forget how much exactly without digging out paperwork)
