Is this shilling? Ebay auct experience

So I was watching an item, decided to bid on it pre end, by around 2 hrs.
Put in my max bid, of which it jumped up to. Wasn't bidding any more, as I'd spotted another another on a bin price.
Checked after the auction ended to find I'd been outbid by someone, roughly 35 seconds before the end of auction. Fine, I'll go do the other auction....

Checked my mail, and 7 and a half mins after auction ended I had a second chance offer sitting there on the item. So someones bid about 35 seconds pre auction end, and then in the next 8 mins (less, because of the time it takes for seller to complete a 2nd chance request to me) have suddenly decided they wrongly bid/whatever.

Is this shilling? or just really dodgy practices of some other nature?

Trying to decide if I take the offer, or just walk away because it makes me feel uncomfortable over the sale.

Is it something that the seller could conceivably have 2 of?

Possibly, but they also were selling same item in different sizes, all others went for at least £14(+) more

I often send second chance offers at very low prices to under bidders to get rid of old stock.

Me too. I usually send second chance offers as soon as possible after auction end, the longer you leave it the less chance of them getting taken up.

If you're happy with the price and item, buy it, if not don't.

  • I have had the same experience several times.

Try Checking the bidders history, see how many items he has bid on and how many of those were with the same seller. Will give you an idea of how the auction smells.

I usually walk away and ignore the second chance offer, which is usually way over my otherwise successful bid. hope this helps.

Oh for crying out loud. If the seller is selling several then he has more than one, no mystery! :wall: People who say they "never take up a second chance offer because it's shilling" are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

  • An actual example.

Was bidding on a second hand carpet cleaning machine, my first bid was £550, three days before auction closed. Two other bidders bid over the next 3 days, I was happy to offer £1010 and did so, was in the lead until 5 minutes before close of bidding with a bid of £810, until xxxx bid automatically up to £1020.

An hour after close I had my second chance offer at £1010. When I checked the "winners" bidding history he had bid on a total of 5 items, 4 of which were selling with the same seller as I was hoping to do business with.

    I walked.

A week of so later another similar machine was on ebay which I won for £720. again I was prepared to go to £1010, but the second seller and I were both happy with the deal. I hope the first seller got sweet FA.

Not from the info supplied, you would need to check what the winning bidder was bidding on. Ebay do take Shilling seriously it is against the law, and I am sure I read someone appeared in court over it.

I have auctioned laptop docking stations before, I setup BIN at say £10 plus P&P, auction some to generate a bit interest (with BIN's for those that can't wait). I may decide due to numbers that anyone bidding £8 or more will get a 2nd chance offer, not because I'm shilling, cause I have lots to shift.

OT - It often amazes me how people bid higher than the £10 BIN that is linked to in the auction listing.

The SCO can only be made at your highest bid, it cannot be over that.
