The mantra on this site for a long time was "read the policy". That's not even necessary these days as the FOS require any unusual or restrictive term to be highlighted very clearly.

I'd be careful saying that. In my view, people should take the effort to read through the insurance policies they buy in total.

If you go for some of the cheapest on comparison sites, then be prepared for hassle, if you need to claim or want to make any changes mid-term.

Suggest people do their research about policy terms and also the Insurance company/intermediary, plus underwriter of the policy.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • Hi,

I work for a well known insurance broker and spend 95% of my working day explaining to people that just going for the cheapest quote isn't always the best course of action. We are not based on commission so there is no benefit to me to sell additional products such as legal cover. I would say that the vast majority of customers I speak to on a daily basis are purely driven by the price, and little, if any, pay attention to the terms, benefits, exclusions etc. This is not to say I am tarring you all with the same brush, as some people do see the benefit in paying to get the cover they want, rather than focusing purely on getting the cheapest price, irrespective of cover. However as I've already said, the vast majority just want a cheap policy and then complain when something doesn't go their way.
