  • Absolutely nothing, I'm afraid. Cash isn't covered by the royal mail insurance AFAIK.

    Yes it is if sent special delivery as it was in this case.

    OP you will need to take this up with RM, but you will need the buyer to retain the packaging. Was it opened and/ or in a RM plastic bag with the 'sorry this was damaged' notice? If not then it will be your word against the sellers and I doubt RM will pay out

    OP = Original poster (you)

    I doubt whether RM will be interested at all if the packaging was intact. Out of interest what sort of envelope did you use, paper or plastic? Do you know the recipient, is there anything Thatv suggests they may be less than honest, ie gumtree sale or their suggestion you sent cash?

    Standard envelope in a special delivery plastic bag (that post office gave me) nothing that i can see,we did try and do it by paypal but ran into various problems, so he asked how i wanted to proceed and thought cash in the post via special delivery would be the safest and best way or paying.....now i know its not
  • As others have said, there really is nothing you can do in regards to a claim.
    Did the post office ask what was in the letter? Because they should have advised you against sending money.

    I guess the only thing your could try is to call their bluff.
    Say you've contacted Royal Mail & they will investigate, and say they have asked you to retain the envelope incase it needs to be passed onto the police. Then, to give the seller an opportunity to change their mind, you could ask them if they're sure the empty envelope is from you by confirming the SD number, and if it doesn't match ask them to check incase they have any other letters that they've missed to open, that might contain your cash.

    But that's a really long shot, and it sounds like you've lost your money. Hope it wasn't too much.

    .

    They wouldn't be able to say that though as RM state cash is acceptable if sent special delivery.

    OP, when you say there was difficulty in paying by paypal, was that your end or theirs?

    If it was them unable to take paypal I would start suspecting this is a scam and you will never see your money again. If so I would do as Rainbow suggests and ask about retaining envelope mentioning the fact that RM and the Police will investigate the theft. I doubt for one moment that it will do any good, but if they are new to scamming it might just worry them a bit.

    thanks for the advice everyone,will have to put it down as a loss and use it as a very expensive lesson (£275).

    will try and call their bluff but as you say i didnt think there was much i could do as i expected it to be my word against theirs.

    it was both,they sent me an invoice but the only way i could pay it for some reason was by echeque,the seller advised me that it takes several days for paypal to process and paypal had told them not to send the item until it had cleared,seller told me that would be 3rd october (i paid the invoice yesterday),he refunded the money and asked me to send him the money via paypal but it wouldnt let me,he asked what i suggested we did next and i suggested i sent cash through the post by special delivery as i thought i was covered if it got lost in the post.....didnt think this was gonna happen.
