Furniture is always going to be expensive new, so freecycle or car boots would be good for getting cots, changing tables, prams etc.Although I would buy a new mattress even if you get a secondhand cot
Also start buying stuff like wipes now. Stockpile them. We found that Tesco don't always get the multipacks priced right so you can save there too. a word of warning though some babies skin just doesn't do well with wipes, our DS was fine with them all although I think the pampers senstive are the best but I know some mums who stockpiled and then couldnt' use any, of course water and cotton wool is cheaper when you are at home anyway and much kinder to skin and don't buy in baby bath as they advise you not to use it as it dries out baby's skin, even though they still use it in hospitals when doing your show bath. I found Lidl nappies good when DS was little btw and much cheaper than big brands, and Tesco own were good too but not quite as cheap unless you got an amazing BOGOF
Check out the Which? website for any big purchases before you waste money on things that look good or have a good name but aren't. We saved hundreds on a pushchair by checking them out first and going for one that got a good review rather than one with a name that should have meant it was better. Then go to Mothercare, try them out, go home, chec it on kelkoo and buy it there-save even more!!and come on here and ask us what we would recommend too, there are loads of threads on having and OS baby. I was chuffed to bits with my pram and it was a great deal in Babies R Us 3 in 1 thing, remember that in the back of the BrUs catalogue which you can pick up in store there are a bunch of vouchers off wipes, prams etc. And I can't stress enough what someone said about the babies clubs and their freebies, get everything that is going and there are loads. Every formula company has a club, Calpol, petit filous, Boots, supermarkets etc and the sooner you join the quicker you will get the goodies as Boots in particular doesn't let you join once you have had the baby I discovered too late
!
well done on giving up the baccy too, can't be easy. Agree with other posters that your grocery budget needs to come down (even if it isn't all food) that is way too much for two people. Oh and congratulations by the way. Best thing that will ever happen to you0 -
Great! I've just found out they are twins!!!! So now I've got double the worries and will have to work and save twice as hard ....
Stopped smoking , in the process of cancelling the PPI , joined loads of baby websites for free stuff, looking into (taking forever..) all the benefits and tax credits etc to help us through this , and I'm waiting for my bank to give me the Data protection request for the last 6 years statements so I can claim my bank charges ( they got 'till 12 may to do this)... if they dont send me this, what do i do?
It would be nice to get some money back from them...0 -
Thank you very much everyone , for all the sound advice and encouraging words!!!

I would just like to say congratulations on the twins.
Good luck with all your efforts to get out of debt, not easy I know but well worth it in the end.
From my experience(2 kids) car booties are great as is the free cycle website and I swear by tesco nappies they are just as good as the big brand names.
When are the babies due?

I have to say twins are fab!
My best friend at school was a twin and I always wanted twins, better to get the costs of child rearing all together in one place. You get bigger bounty packs too
Good luck and congratulations to you both - one each0 -

They are 12 weeks in, so they should be due round about end of October.
I'm looking fwd to it , but still pretty worried about the financial situation.
Thanks for the kind words and support!0 -
At least before you buy anything for the babies you are acknowledging that things are tight financially which means you won't go daft like so many of us do with babies on the way.
Keep a look out on ebay nearer the time for clothing bundles that could save you a bit, my daughter is 2 in July and she is lovely kitted out in Next, M&S, even Gap but its cost me next to nothing and gets sold on again. See if I bought brand new first thing I did was put it in the washing machine all those germs in factories lol - so now I cut out the middle man the shop and use ebay except for special occasions.
Tesco brand nappies are spot on too better than huggies or pampers!0 -
But remember if you buy Tesco nappies, redeem your pampers voucher at the same time, they are even better with a pound off!0
