Sorry to read this, but you have done the right thing by treating her now. :( Will she take to raw chicken wings or turkey necks to help clean her teeth? You might also try low carb, these can feed plaque bacteria just as sugars can.

one of mine had all of his teeth (bar fangs) out by the age of 5, and he copes fine :) in fact, he probably ate better once they were gone than when they were in.

    oh, and hes 9ish now!

he manages his kibble fine, and loves raw food - though, I helpfully cut it into small pieces for him so he wont choke.

on the plus side... his love bits hurt less than the other cats! :rotfl:

    hope the op goes well.
  • My cat also had all his teeth out behind the canines. I can't remember the final cost but it wasn't more than £200.

My cat had very bad stomatitis. He was only 2 but in a lot of pain.

He is doing much better now. I give him wet food mostly but he still eats kibble.

    Hope all goes well :)

She's really fussy with food, turns her nose up at any meat, she's a fish fan and has Sainsburys expensive 70-odd pence a tin stuff with PAH purely biscuits; tried and wasted so much other stuff it's not worth it.

The practice nurse said about trying Hills prescription kibble specifically for cats who are prone to dodgy teeth, and she's given me a sample to try. But I'm a bit sceptical, as I thought it was a fallacy about biscuits helping to keep teeth clean? Is anyone else using these?

I thought she would be feeling really sorry for herself - they said keep her quiet for a couple of days - but she's dashing about all over the place, seemingly not that bothered by it!!

NB, just to say will will be moving to a more country location in the next few weeks, so there will be more 'raw' food opportunities for her!

My Jerry Cat has barely any teeth. Also had to go in for at least a couple to come out when he was around 4 or 5, and they took his gorgeous beloved extra long fangs too. I was so heartbroken as they were lovely - really long, and made his lips turn down lol. Everything was infected (he was a rescue cat who'd been outside for a while - prob something to do with it).

He's had a few more teeth out since (he's now around 11) and now just has just a few tiny spiky ones at the back and one or two nearer the front. He manages to eat just fine - even biscuits.

Don't think the food's made much difference to Jerry - he would have had problems anyway. He frequently gets an abscess on the side of his face (touch wood, not had one for a year) - they reckon it's all related somehow. He's just unlucky with that part of his make-up I think. Bad mouth-related things, etc. He's always had biscuits and wet food btw.

Hope the bill isn't too extreme!

  • Don't know whether anyone can shed any light on this, but since the op. she has refused to sleep on/in any of her 3 beds. If I sit long enough it's me, if not, the floor. Very strange!

Maybe she just needs cuddles and reassurance?

    Oh bless! Poor wee soul.

They adapt so well though Murph. I'm afraid I've no advice at all as mine are all fully fanged-but sounds as i she just wants cuddles like Zaksmum said.

Hope it didn't break the bank though :o

£334 Sazzy, not as bad as I expected though, as she had x-rays done of a shoulder she has been limping on. After checking the receipt more thoroughly when I got back they weren't on there.

We went back for a check-up yesterday and I thought I'd get stung, as they were going to ask if I wanted them sent off somewhere else that could look at them more closely?! Well I didn't (as she is better) and nothing else was mentioned :shhh: :j

Anyway, after the check-up everything is back to normal - she is back in her beds - and when the vet showed me her mouth I was amazed how good it looked after only 2 days, no inflammation, soreness, nothing, and puds looks really happy about it, must have been giving her a bit more jip than we knew.

Glad I took her in for the limp as we wouldn't have seen a vet until Dec for her jabs. Money well spent for a happy cat :D

Great post! Glad your kitty is back to normal! :D

As a vet nurse I feed mine mostly dry, with the odd bit of wet - I think too much of either can cause problems - purely wet - dental issues, purely dry - potential urinary tract problems.

My two thrive on this and have perfect teeth - although they do hunt a lot too.

As for the dental diet a poster had been recommended - I tend to advise it as a treat, or an add on to an already balanced wet/dry ratio. Yes it does help, and I use it on my own pets, but if your cat has had multiple teeth extracted under the age of 5yo - incl canines!! - then its usefulness will be limited.

Far better to get your dog or cat used to having their teeth brushed - at a young age if poss.

Most vets run a dental month where you can get a free check up from a RVN, and free advice on dental care
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
