How much grit?

Like a lot of other people my garden is currently flooded
especially at the bottom near the house.
This section was really heavy clay; I've already dug lots of clay out and then replaced with new top soil. Dug it over again this year adding lots of organic matter and compost (and yes, my back is killing me
)
It has flooded worse than this in the past, so the soil improvements have obviously had some impact as it now does drain away....just very slowly.
I was thinking of adding some grit to help with drainage. I've done some research however I can't find anywhere that says what sort of quantities to add? Anyone any ideas?
Will I need to dig it all over again before adding the grit?
Also, I'd be interested to know if there are any (cheaper!!) alternatives?

This year I will have something that resembles a garden and not a building site!

How about digging a soakaway or drainage system? Basically this means either digging a large hole or a series of interconnecting channels leading downhill to a soakaway at the lowest point of the garden, filling it with stones or rubble and then topping it off with soil.
However as it's near the house I would do quite a bit of research and perhaps consult a professional before starting. Googling will show you what I'm on about.Val.0 -
