Gavin mills have left my front door in this state!!! what recourse do i have

had a front door installed a couple of years ago by Gavin mills and conservatorys based in colchester and after a few months the door warped and it had to be reset in its hinges. This has happend 2 or 3 times over the last two years, but they blamed the sun shining on it throughout the day. This year the bottom rubber (flappy seal) under the dorr come away, they sent a fitter who said they dont carry the part but they will order it. This happend at the start of the summer holidays, by the end of the holidays i called them to ask how things were progressing to be told that the part had just arrived that day!

They called to say that they can fit it and gave me a time of 1.30pm, but i said the fitter said to my wife upon leaving last time that the door would have to be removed and my wife has the school run around 2.30pm so they would that leave enough time to allow removal and refitting, so they agreed and rescheduled teh fitting date. So booked in to fit the part at 1230 today, fitter removes the door, and says to my wife its the wrong part! hes now removed part of the back rubber strip at the bottom door so that there is a gaping hole underneth the door, you can see the car parked outside!
just phoned there office to say i was unhappy that the door has been left in this way especially as its getting colder now, and we have no idea how long it will be until they come back. She said she will talk to the suppliers direct to see what they can do, her words, '' best i can do i'm afraid''. I said its been nearly 10 weeks, and her reply was we tried to do it two weeks ago but your wife put the date back, and i said true but you told me the door didnt have to be taken off and it does, thats what your fitter has been doing for the last hour, her reply ''the door doesnt have to be taken off'' and i said it does its laying on my driveway right now so she said ''the slab'' and i replied the door has yes. She said oh we call that the slab, the door is the frame, which makes no sense to me whatsoever why would you take the door frame out to fit a rubber seal under the door or slab or whatever you call it.

i suppose i have no recourse whatsever but to try to plug the gap until they come to sort it out. funny thing is we were just talking about getting our windows replaced next year and gutterings.... certainly wont be getting any further work from me.

if only its a warnign to others thinking of using gavin mills in colchester, customer service in non exsistent and aftersales is pathetic.

heres what we are left with,

  • i'm sure some of the guys in the know will be able to shed some more light on the door, but i have never seen a door that fits into the frame like that with a huge rubber at the bottom, why on earth would you have such a large gap at the bottom ?
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

hmm not sure, it suppose to have one fitted to the front but thats the one that broke off, but at least we still had a seal on the back of the door, which he has had to remove part of.

Given all the trouible you've had with this obviously inferior product I'd be banging the largest desk as hard as I could demanding a replacement that fits properly at their cost. They are governed by EU legislation for a period of 6 years in relation to "not fit for purpose" products whether they like it or not. How were you supposed to keep the sun off an exterior door in the first place? What abject nonsense!!

    Cheers

  • Just had a look at their website and they are showing the FENSA logo so I'd get FENSA involved. Check their registration at www.fensa.co.uk/asp/Member_Search.asp? (I couldn't find them but I may not be searching the correct name).

There's a complaints section in the FAQ, just follow what it says to get FENSA to either a) force the company to make the repair, or b) perform the repair under their guarantee.

thanks for all the replies, ive had one of the directors on the phone trying to defend th ewoman i spoke to saying that in the trade we do refer to a door they mean the frame and the door itself is called a slab, so i just said thats just so unbelieveable i'm not going to keep going on about it, and when dealing with customers how are they suppose to know the trade jargon. Ask 100 people to describe what a door is and i bet none say its the frame that the door sits in!!
Hes asked for the part to be shipped from the suppliers overnight to them and they couldnt do it but they should get it friday, hes blaming the part supplier.

The damaged/missing rubber seal is not the problem. The massive gap under the door is.

Either the door is too small, or the frame is too big, or both.
