When should I claim?

My employment was terminated on 31st August 2012 by way of a compromise agreement. As well as an ex-gratia payment I have also been given 4 weeks pilon (from 31/08/12) and 2 weeks un-used holiday payment.

I am currently signed off sick and beleive I will be entitled to contribution based esa.

Question is when can/should I start applying for the benefit?

I believe you can claim from 1 sep, backdated, if you have a medical certificate covering that period. (Claim will not be payable till 4th sep)
PILON and holiday pay are not normal income expected to cover their normal periods, but payment for work already completed.
