Guarantee on Windows

My mother passed away last year and passed her house on to myslef and my sister in her will.
The windows of her house have a condensation problem and noticed from her paperwork that they were fixed back in 2008 with a 10 year guarantee included on the work they did. The windows now need looking at due to the condensation problem.

Does anyone know if the guarantee applies to myslef and my sister as I want to ring up the windows company and tell them they need to come round and fix the problem.
I know I should check teh t&c's but wondered from a legal standing if there is a general policy of this sort of scenario.

You will have to read the T&Cs the guarantee might have died with your mother and be non transferable.

You need to read the terms and conditions on two counts.
    1) as Hintza suggests, it may not be transferable
    2) The 10 year guarantee that many window companies offer is a bit of a marketing ploy. The 10 years normally only covers the frames. Very little goes wrong with them! The glazing u it's and hinges /locks are normally on a much shorter guarantee, typically 12 or 24 months.

  • I doubt whether this would be covered anyway. Condensation happens and it's not really a fault with the windows. It's warm inside air meeting cold glass and window frames. Look for a solution to treat the cause because many people have the same problem.

As others have said it depends what you mean by condensation, if it is between the panes of glass (fogging) that should be covered, if it is on the surface probably not.

As for the guarantee being transferable, depends on the document........but if the windows were installed by a member of the Glass and Glazing Federation the guarantee must be transferable as a condition of membership in accordance with their Code of Practice. There may be a charge for the transfer.

  • Thanks all. The condensation is between the glass panels of the double glazing. Any idea on the easiest way to remove it.
  • if it's between the glass the units have failed replace the units
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
