That stephen fry quote is all well and good, given that he's regarded as some sort of touchstone for rational thinking, but it all falls apart once you go beyond what people like he accept as "acceptable comment".
He might/might not be ok with allusions to underage sex acts by a 30 yr old with a 15 yr old; who really knows (obviously welshwoofs has appropriated his approval by proxy).
bt what if one were to suggest a non-consensual act of the same nature by 5x 30 year old men and 1 x 15 (or, well, I'd prefer to go no further but it's not something that has not occurred) yr old.
I'd find that offensive to be something joked about. And welshwoofs could use his fry jpeg. And it would have the same meaning, same effect, same basis.
Ergo, it's rather a pointless attempt to justify something which has no basis without applying some true judgement to the merits of the comment in question.
Fry probably wasn't intending to denigrate the issue of offence per se, but to denigrate the careless use of "I'm offended" without any real justification of why such a reaction might have a genuine grievance.

Is this the same Stephen Fry who went in a huff like a big girls blouse on Twitter when something someone posted upset him?0

Well of course it is a sort of dictatorship. It's a privately owned website, this isn't Democracy Live it's a business. The owners of this website can do what they like. You don't have the right to disagree with that but you do have the right not to frequent this site.
As this is at least the second thread you have commented on where you have described the website as fascist and dictatorial, might I suggest that you start your own website?0 -
What's to stop one individual using the abuse system to target the posts of another?
I did attempt to discuss this issue on here last week but the thread was quickly removed!
I'm afraid because MSE are a private forum, their decisions are thought to be beyond reproach. However, occupying such a central role in UK consumer affairs the forum serves as a conduit for consumer complaints and potential activism. Likewise, in view of high profile corporate abuses it will inevitably attract industry apologists some of whom are professionally trained in PR to subtly quell anger and manipulate the rule system to their advantage using groupthink and other methods. Whether this amounts to Astroturfing it is difficult to prove, but asking everyone to declare any interest in the Financial industry could be a good start.0 -

in the milgram experiment, 40 out of 40 specimens thought it was ok to hurt, harm, abuse, terrorise and be violent to other human beings - i don't think that support for a horror filled cheerleader (the "teacher" in the experiment) means that torture is ok or that it should be normalised
i like to feel for people, it is not ok to make fun of some subjects, desenstise our senses and normalise that kind of humor, imo
no one should be immune to censorship, although some populists around, wrongfully assume and expect the rest of us to not report - i shall be dutifully reporting as adn when i belive it has to be0 -

In case you are not aware of it, there has recently been serious doubt cast on the results of the Milgram experiment, from a number of standpoints (not least of which are the ethics of Milgram himself).
