Poor Walter

My wife has just taken out poor cat Walter to the vet for his boosters and to tell the vet Walter is getting bad breathe.Poor Wallybag has Gingivitis and will need 6 teeth extracting. The cost is about £350 which is a lot of money for us but poor Wallybag being in pain hurts more, poor Walter.

  • I agree that it would not be at all kind to leave Walter in pain with rotten teeth, but that does seem a pretty expensive price from your vet.
I am in London so definitely not a cheap area and was recently quoted £200 for a dental which included whatever extractions were needed plus cleaning.

I thought it was expensive but we cannot leave him in pain, would another vet quote?
  • I've just seen your post after I posted, I have yet to see my bill, but 2 teeth out were going to be £220, I was told it was £75 per 15 minutes surgery!!

She had to have an x-ray as well as they found a lump on her shoulder (inconclusive it seems) so I think it will be a whopper!! She's only got 8 teeth left, poor little girl. :(

You can certainly ring around for quotes, though most vets want you to transfer your pet to them - which involves them asking current vets for notes etc. I actually changed practices due to costs when my cat needed extensive extractions!

The cost is usually broken down to consultation, anaesthesia (basic dose + extra if op lasts longer), cost of extraction x number of teeth, post-op care and meds. Remaining teeth are often descaled and polished too.

One of my Maine Coons has had 2 lots of extractions and both times the cost was under £200. Some cats have chronic gum disease that necessitates further extractions, others respond to regular dental care.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
  • Well, not as bad as I thought actually £334 inc. meds and x-rays. She got to have 5 days of 2x a day anti-biotic tablets which is going to be great fun with a poorly mouth!!

Can the vet charge you for return check up visits,Walter has to go back for 3 more visits to make sure he is healing and to check for infection. Is it up to each individual vet to charge what they want.
  • Morphine and 3 visits, that sounds a lot. Puds was awake and raring to go after her op and 2 days later after check-up (no charge) that's it. As I said on my thread, I am amazed at how little 'damage' this has caused to her mouth, hardly any redness, inflammation and soreness, I was well impressed. If they heal that quickly 3 visits seems a but extreme but Im not privy to the op. so just giving you my experience. Can't say about the charges, but I did ask if follow-ups were included when I asked about the price.

Surprisingly Walter seems back to normal today,i thought it would take longer.I should have asked about the all in one price my fault. My wife picked him up and never took much notice of what was on the bill as she wanted him home asap. There was a 250ml bottle of vet aquadent to put in his water priced at £8.49,it sells on the net at £4.79 for 500 ml.
