    Good idea!

I did laugh at their audacity to think people would actually pay £150 just because they send them a picture of a (cleaner's?) sock hanging on the smoke alarm...people who pay must be downright stupid.

I'm afraid it's all down to those scary looking letters that frighten people into paying up.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

Even my 11 year old lad piped up 'that's just a scam isn't it Mummy?' before I had even said a word...although I was laughing so it was a bit of a clue.

And he knows about the PPC scam and their pet debt collectors of course, all my family do. This one with the phoney Travelodge 'smoking fine' is sooo similar to PPC World, right down to the extortionate amount and debt collector threatograms.

Let's just wait for the Government to have the bright idea of registered keeper liability for that...!

Genius attempt at making money though, we could all try it next time someone visits our home: how about a 'farting fine', 'boring conversation fine', 'penalty for beating my teenage lad at Call of Duty on the xbox'...you name it, there's a fake fine for it!

''Well, I just put some signs up by the front door and it's a contract m'lud - including parental liability for their offspring.''

Well it is a money saving website and that would cut down on fuel costs :)

The moment they showed the picture of a sock on the smoke alarm I said "its probably someone in a wheelchair". There is no other word for Travelodge's action in that case other than SCAM! And if they are prepared to allow such actions in their lodges it is little wonder that they support similar in their car parks.
  • Dishonest company.

Lodges are dismal dirty doss houses.

Will never stay at one again.

    Run by crooks.

It's Premier Inn for me many times this year. Always a good experience.

The Travelodge would be a good one to try.

It would be interesting if you book, agree to the t&c's, that include

"You must not smoke in any of our hotels or interfere with our fire detection system. If you do so we will terminate your booking. We may either (at our sole discretion) request the immediate re-payment of our costs during your stay or instruct a third party to contact you after your stay to recover our costs. The costs we incur if you smoke in our hotel include costs for specialist cleaning, repair or replacement of damage by you to our property, the cost of the room for any period it is unusable and our administration expenses."

Then try to whinge about it later.

I won't stay in a room that smells of smoke. It doesn't clean out by flicking a duster around and washing the shower out, so they incur an added cost they can prove.

Post back up if you do try it though.

You have missed the point. That being that the people on Watchdog were all non-smokers and a chap in a wheelchair who could not shin up a bedpost to put a sock on a smoke alarm, to save his life.

I would love to try this at Travelodge as I am also a non-smoker...but then (like other posters) I prefer Premier Inn as well, so grotty old Travelodge may be a step too far just to collect the fake fine and new threatograms.

"All of our hotels operate a 100% no smoking policy throughout. Smoking in a bedroom will result in a £100 fine."

Go for it at a Premier Inn.

edit - twice by the look of it.

Oh Goody, potential for new threatograms!

But then again all of my family are non-smokers, so unless they are operating a scam like it seems Travelodge (allegedly) could have been, or if their cleaners are having a sneaky smoke once a room is vacated (like at Travelodge perhaps) then I am not likely to collect a fine with my morning paper.
