Im off to france next week for the day to do some mega beer/wine stocking up

Never been before but reading some posts on here the some of the local largers are suppose to be good (St Omer one a read) but wondered any tips on good cheap wine to look out for. Really looking for red wine and not that keen on full body wine, i like it nice and fruity :p

  • Why not just take pot luck, sort of. Mix in what you know you like (there will be plenty of it there) with a few wild stabs in the dark. They sell wine from all around the world these days, not just French wine.

For french wine look for "vin du Pays doc" on the label as this signifies quality as opposed "appellation controlee" which is not so stringent in quality checks!
or go for the austailian, californian & south african. What ever have fun trying & tasting. Ha Ha!

Our friends always bring back J P Cheney wines. The bottle has a bent neck and does not fit on your wine rack. But it seems a good all round cheaper tasty wine. (Asda, 3 for a tenner normally)

    Have you been--yet!
I think that most normal French wines, by that I mean the cheaper like JP Chenet, have had their day. The New World wines are [all a matter of taste] so much nicer.
Lindemans, Hardy's Stamp or VR, Blossom Hills, Banrock Station, Kumala are much more fruity but more mellow to taste. Very easy drinking.
These you can pick up between £10-£15 a case of 6 from the warehouses in Calais.
As for beers, in the same place sell beer by the case of 24 cans. Stella being the most popular at £11-30 a case [Belgian Stella not English] but Fosters or Kronenberg are about £9 a case.
Hope that helps. As you can tell I go over on a regular basis.

Why not just take chance on some of those exotic beers they sell too? Go on, there's more to France/Belgium than dull old, over-hyped Stella.

I agree with Lemmy, go for something different. I mean Tesco had 24 cans of Fosters on offer for £9. Why go to France!!!!!

  • See if you can get some of the Belgium Trappist beers.Very dark and strong and really tasty!
We once bought a selection of British bitters at less than what they cost over here!(That was in Mammout)

look for the wines with a macon award, these are awards given to good wines, they are either, gold, silver of bronze and are a sticker about the size of a £2 coin, they look a bit like a medal

or take a corkscrew with you, buy a few wines, take them outside, taste them and then if you like them, go back and buy them
