Am I on a fair wage?

  • Don't get me started on contractors. I spent most of my weekend working unpaid because some useless !!!!!!! contractor can't follow instructions on £500 a day

Some contractors are useless and some perms are useless - I'd argue more of the later given when your having to renew every 3-6 months people question if your really worth £144,000+ a year

I've walked away from much bigger sums than that because companies are in such a bad state due to miss management by perms and expect you to be the panacea and be able to fix everything for them but you know that they are the problem and they arent wanting to change.

I do at least get paid for most the times I've had to work all weekend because a perm has messed up as they are lazy/ dont follow instructions/ useless/ on "emergency" holiday etc
  • Having looked at the work you do and your qualifications it does appear that you're only on a salary that is just above the minimum wage and in my opinion this is too low.
I agree with other posters on here. Get yourself on every training course your current employer offers, do extra if you can in your own time. Be prepared to sit this job out for a year or two (but keep looking) and keep a log of all the work you do so that when you make an application you have the evidence in front of you.
With IT, companies often like you to you have one or two years of experience working in a particular area. This gets you the experience that employers need to really consider you for a role. I would be asking for more demanding projects and really stretching yourself at this point.
It is hard to do when the money is rubbish but you will get there, it may take a little time.
There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.
  • Thanks for the advice guys.

There is only me and another guy in the IT department. We work under the 'Operations' department, which is basically Purchasing. The other guys job role is IT controller. He does have more knowledge than me and does have a degree. I can fully understand that he should have a good pay, and he has just had a wage rise of £3,000 to take him to £26,000.

I have access to the wages that everyone is on (sneaky, I know) and I feel on the whole the company pays the equivalent to the industries wage. There does seem to be a few people on a low wage for what they contribute though.

I love working for the company, I get along with everyone and my knowledge is always going to keep increasing. It is a really nice environment to work in. The company does want to put me on Crystal Reports training, but will not look at getting me on any other courses until March.

I have had a look at indeed.co.uk, and have seen that similar job roles in my area which I feel I could get would offer around £16,000 on average. I am going to speak to my boss to state that I am disappointed with the wage rise given, as it is only a little bit above minimum wage. I will ask for an increase to £15,000 (showing the job roles and the wages that I can attain), and see where to go from there.
