Cellar tanking/soundproofing DIY? HELP!

My boyfriend and I have just bought our first home
It is a little 1900s 2up 2down terrace with a cellar to the front. Boyf is a musician and we would love to turn the cellar into a music room.
We know that we will need to get the cellar tanked and soundproofed but we don't have much money. Has anyone ever heard of someone doing this job themselves? We know what tanking involves and given that our cellar is in pretty good shape (ie, very little damp) is it possible for us to do most of the work on our own? Have trawled the internet looking for DIY advice for this and found none!
My boyfriends dad is very handy (he converted an old barn from scratch into 2 flats-incl plumbing and electrics on his own!) so he would be on hand to help us.
Or, how much would it cost just to get someone in to fit the tanking membranes? Our cellar is about 14X14ft with decent headroom-I'd guess a little over 6ft.
Can you get builders in to show you how to do certain jobs for say, a day and then have a go at it yourself? Forgive my ingnorance but I've never done anything like this before!
