Driving licence woes
Options
Hi gang
I married in 2008 but haven't changed my surname on my licence or changed my address as I have moved several times in the last few years.
Having read the DVLA website it states I need to fill in a form from the post office and send in original documents ie passport or marriage certificate to prove my identity. But surely this will indicate to the DVLA that I've had a new married name since 2008 and not just recently. I'm obviously worried as I don't want a 1000 pound fine.
BTW all my vehicle documentation is registered under my married name and address.
Any advice is gratefully received.
Thanks

You won't get a fine.
Or any other comeback.0 -
Hi Quentin
Could you possibly expand on your statement?

Hi Quentin

You can legally call yourself whatever you want as long as it isn't for deception purposes in this country. If you wanted to continue using your maiden name, you can. There is nothing in law that states you have to use your married name once you're married.0 -
My wife carried on using her maiden name up until last year but her photocard expires this year so she will do the name change then. I wouldn't worry in the slightest about not changing your name."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

However, failing to notify the DVLA of a change of address IS an offence that could incur a fine.0 -

I still had my licence address at my parents house 20 years after I moved out, my other half is still at her parents old house (address wise). But the postie would still deliver it to the correct address where we live now.0 -

That's great for you. But you are putting your trust in the postie on a matter which could result in 6 points and a £1000 fine.
My advice to the OP, notify the DVLA of any changes and hope for the best. Just because you gained your marital name in 2008 does not mean you moved in 2008.0 -
I haven't bothered changing my address. And been moved for 10 years from the registered address
I have had points on my license twice in that time and even had to go and check with DVLA that my car was not the cloned one in an issue over some parking tickets I received.
My main reason for not changing is that I still have a paper license and it does not have a 10 year shelf life..
I shall wait until I receive something demanding I do it.
Does anyone have any figures on the amount of fines for this offence get issued each year ..I have never heard anyone I know ever even be threatened with a fine ?0 -

It only has to be an address where you can be contacted, not necessarily where you live. If you can be contacted through the address on the licence, there is no requirement to change it.0
