Great winter boot hunt

Options
I'm trying to track down some boots that will be good for the winter. Ideally I want something that will keep my tootsies warm, dry and comfortable but that also looks stylish and can be worn with trousers or a dress.

Does such a thing exist or am I expecting too much from a boot?

Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated!

(just for the record, before someone suggests them, I am not from the camp that thinks uggs are stylish!)

From my past experience with boots it's always worth paying a little extra to get good quality. The amount of times i've bought cheap shoes and they've conked out within a couple of weeks or so...

Personally speaking I love some of the boots on ASOS. Depends on your budget really.

But you know what i'm hankering after? A pair of Doc Martins. I love them. They are easily the best boot I've ever had. Comfy, stylish and last. Unfortunately I can't afford a new pair :(
  • I agree that for footwear it's worth paying a bit more and getting something that is good quality. I'm more concerned about the boots doing the job and looking nice than about getting a bargain. (a bargain is a bonus but not necessary!)

OP, do you want a heel or not? Leather, suede or patent? Black, brown, tan?

Have you looked in the Clarks outlet stores? Or in Asda or Tesco? I got my greige flat boots from Tesco a couple of years ago, and bought some flat black boots from Asda just last week - both leather, both good quality.
  • I have to agree with Tesco - I got some brown riding style boots there last year and they're very comfortable and look as good as when I bought them despite a lot of wear.

I also have some boots from White Stuff that I can totally recommend, they're tan leather and opposite end of the scale price wise but gorgeous and very comfortable.

I bought a pair of Dune boots in the January sales at John Lewis about 3 years ago- reduced to £60 from £120! :)

They're so comfy and I love them! I wear them pretty much every day in the winter, and I've just had them re-heeled for £15 so they'll last another 3 years :)

I agree about Doc martins, I have had a pair for 3 winters now that are still going strong and I walk about 10 miles a day so they have done hundreds of miles!

They aren't the traditional looking Doc martins either, there are a lot of different styles - I know that the traditional ones aren't for everyone.

  • I'm kinda in the same position. I bought a pair of dark brown leather boots in a Next sale years ago, I've had them reheeled lots and they are soooo comfy. However they are now past the point of repair. :(

I happened to get an email from Soletrader outlet who are having a big sale on some of their boots and I've managed to pick up a pair of fitflop boots for £79. They haven't arrived yet mind you, so whether they will fit I'm not sure, but I'm hoping that they fit and will last for many years like my old boots.

I've also got a pair of shoes that I bought from Evans, again years ago. I've got wide feet and its very hard to find stylish heeled shoes that fit. I need to bit the bullet and replace them also as my boss mentioned that they were looking tatty (in a nice way obviously, we get on very well) and kind of pointed out what I already knew. So I've got a couple of pairs of wide fit shoes from clarks on the way so see how they fit.

I hate shoe shopping with a passion!!!

Can I just pick up on something that a few people have mentioned, i.e having shoes / boots re-heeled & re-soled?

Timpsons do a Rhino sole & heel (not cheap, I grant you) that they guarantee for the life of the boots / shoes....so if they wear through, Timpsons will replace them f.o.c. I have done this to all my boots, and previously I was having them resoled annually so I am already saving ;)

I am really liking the riding boot style just now. They have a gorgeous pair on the Very site. I'm just trying to justify the purchase :)

I got some from Matalan last year and was really impressed with them for the price. They've a suede type effect with a fur cuff at the top that goes down into so they're really toasty. Small heel but really comfy and work with trousers or skirt/dress. I didn't risk them in the snow/slush we had up here but they were fine in the rain.
