Searching for a high-end dual-core Android phone

Hi there!

I'm in the hunt to replace my HTC Sensation this coming Christmas/New Year sales with a new Android 4/4.1 phone.

My budget is £300-ish and what i'm looking for is the phone must be dual-core, a 1.0Ghz CPU (at least), 1GB RAM (at least), current-gen GPU, a BSI camera (with all the image stabilisation/low-light/1080p stereo recording, burst-mode, etc.features), a very good sound quality (with Dolby, some sort of surround sound and customisable equalizers) and one that has a replaceable battery and/or good battery life.

Any suggestions guys?

The only thing I would be wary of is some HTC handsets. I have had quite a lot of signal issues with HTC phones and I have owned 3..

HTC Legend - Poorest signal ever
Google Nexus One - Pretty poor indoors
HTC One S - Was OK until I picked it up and then it would lose 1-2 bars meaning making to receiving calls was hard. I sent it back under the distance selling regulations after 5 days.

It could just be that Vodafone are rubbish but I also had a Galaxy SII and that was fine with the same SIM.

The Galaxy SIII is probably still the best Android phone around.

Galaxy 3 is a cute phone no question - may be worth holding off choosing quite yet though as T-Orange have a new brand/network coming out - and there may be early-adopter deals for 4G handsets. Mind you, 4G and battery life are not two phrases you hear in the same sentence

Had HTC handsets in the past and so far the issue/s i got where with the calling part (the person i was talking to says they couldn't hear me clearly even though i was shouting and i'm on a good signal area) and a so-so battery life.

The Galaxy S3 would be the best phone of choice at the moment but it is out of my budget. Next is the Galaxy Nexus but i don't like the 5MP-only camera. Next would be the S2 but it has a poor audio quality.

I'm kinda liking the Huawei Ascend P1 and the ZTE Grand X phones but it seems to suffer criticisms especially the camera and battery life.

HTC One X is beyond my budget. The One S might be within my budget but i'm hesitant because of it's non-replaceable battery. The Sensation XL might be a fair choice but specs are very similar with the normal Sensation and heard of general problems with the OS, screen and camera. (I could be wrong now).

I don't fancy Motorola as they tend to have the updates very late. Sony might be a wise choice but again i'm very cautious as the sound quality seem to be not equal to the market standard that is Dolby Mobile. Maybe they have improved their audio/music equalizer settings. I dunno.

Another good choice might be the LG Optimus 4X GD which is a quad-core phone but (like in past handsets) it has been plagued by a so-so/average but quite capable (i heard) camera and a poor battery life although it is replaceable so i can live with that.

    What say you guys?
  • Had HTC handsets for years, Love them all and never had a problem. Don't get me wrong theres always someone had a problem with some phone. And don't forget, call dropouts etc could be issue with provider. Im sure it's no secret the number of iPhone 4 signal issues a while back, Yet the iPhone 5 preorders/sales hardly reflect this. Theres always the odd dodgy handset that gets made. It happens. Currently got the Evo3d which is within your budget (Unless your against eBay) and I think meets most of your needs. I Don't use the 3d but its nice. Going for the Galaxy note 2 next month. Point I'm trying to make is... try not to get put off by the odd bad review/experience. Its a lottery with reliability. What I do is pick out all phones within budget that i want, then go for the best looking one in the shortlist. Only thing to keep in mind with LG is that they tend to (not always) do a 'Sony Xperia'... And make everything LG-ified rather then the standard OS. Honestly without eBay. I don't think you'l get everything you want under 300. Phone tend to be tight with cameras, never put the higher specs in the non top model phones (affects sales if theres not much difference in the cheaper and expensive handsets).

Sorry couldn't have been more help, let us know how you get on.

  • Google Galaxy Nexus.

Unlocked with ICS out of the box and should be easier to get Jellybean on it if you so desire.
  • Been looking around for similar, quite interested to see the Motorola razri due out in october looks good at the price.8G internal memory with sd card slot.:D HTC ONE S looks like a nice phone but 8G internal memory may be to small for some people :embarasse. The samsung S2/ Apple 4/4s for similar money on contract.(£20-25) a month.
