Best large budget bike ( 23" )

I need a new, affordable bike with a large 23 inches frame as I'm 6'4" tall.

Any recommendations?

  • Road, mountain or hybrid?
  • Some idea of 'affordable' would be helpful and what sort of usage it will be for!

Assuming £300 is okay then try and locate a BTwin Triban 3 road bike from Decathlon. Decathlon also do some decent hybrids and mountain bikes but try and stay away from the BSOs (Bike shaped objects) from other places.

Have a look at the forums on cyclechat and bikeradar for some other ideas.

What do you mean by BSOs?

I fancied the Revolution Streetfinder '12 from the Edinburgh Bicycycle Cooperative (then £230) but they only built models up to 22". They recommended the Ridgeback Velocity '12 instead which was a whooping £100 more expensive. I look for something around the £250 mark.

Thanks for recommending some specialists forums.

22" in one brand is not necessarily smaller than 23" in another make.

as said, you can't simply pick a size that will fit in every brand
    worth checking eBay/gumtree
you are outside the 'average' sizes which can often mean cheap prices
  • Cycling Plus magazine is pretty good for regular reviews of bikes too.

I was in the local bike shop the other day, when someone brought in a 29er single speed off-road bike for servicing, they guy was tall like you, but the bike itself must be the biggest bike I've ever seen, it was huge, though looked nice and probably cost a pretty penny.

I guess one could adjust the height of the saddle though.

Bike Shaped Objects, cheap (as opposed to budget) bikes which weigh a ton and may put you off cycling for life

    The saddle offer some adjustment
it however doesnt change the length of the top tube for example
too long/too short and the bike will never really fit
