Bathroom design advice?

I've got a really hideous bathroom in my flat which I've now got enough money saved up to update. It currently has an avocado green suite with orangey tiles which were painted over with magnolia matt paint by the previous owner and now quite a lot of that paint is peeling away so it looks particularly bad.

Part of the reason for updating the bathroom is that I want to add value to the flat and make it more appealing to buyers in the future. I don't expect to move for probably another 5 years or so though.

So I'm wondering what's the sort of bathroom that would be attractive to most people? Obviously I'm going for a white suite, and a shower screen rather than curtain but I'm not sure what to do about the tiles. I like rooms to be quite colourful and I'd like a blue or turquoise colour in there somewhere. I've seen some really nice mosaic tiles as well, but I've wondered whether having colourful tiles might not be to everyone's tastes.

Would it be better to go for white tiles and paint one of the walls to get some colour in there instead? That way, anyone in future can easily change the look of the room by painting one wall and they don't have to worry about the expense of replacing tiles? At the moment, the whole bathroom is tiled as well. Is it better to have tiles on every wall or would having only the area around the bath/shower tiled be ok? Also, if I had a painted wall, would the paint need redoing because of the moisture and does using the special bathroom paint make it last longer?

Sorry if these are daft questions! If anyone's got any other things to consider as well, that'd be good. I think I also need to replace the light, because that looks quite dated as well.

I would think trying to install a new bathroom now, with a view to selling in about 5 years is a bit pointless.

Fashions and home decor ideas change all the time and what is very popular now might not be, in 5 years. Just think, avocado suites were once very popular.

I would get something nice now, that YOU like.

If it is still OK in 5 years, treat it as a bonus

    Yuk! Very 1970s.

Even yuckier. Surprised you don't suffer from severe headaches. :D

As poster above says you should pick what you like rather than cater for someone elses tastes in 5 - 10 years time.

  • agree with both above but you need to break the tiles up abit, white suite with all white tiles does look abit clinical
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
