Energy supplies when moving house

Hi everyone,
I am moving house in October. My current electricity supplier (only have electricity at the moment) - Scottish Power - wont let me take my current package (Online Capped until Jan 2014) with me. Someone has told me that I am better staying with the current supplier to the house I am moving to (E-on for electricity and British Gas for gas) for the while and then switching in 12 months after the initial contract. Anyone got any advise - thanks in anticipation.
Alan.

I think they have said that so you can assess your annual usage. Its useful advice but you could be losing out in year 1.

You enter Deemed contracts which will mean standard rates, which will be higher. If you plan on doing nothing for a year, why live with standard rates?

You could assess your consumption needs earlier than 12 months if you take regular readings and assess your use of appliances, heating, etc.

  • Hi Alan

Unless you tell us otherwise, when you move in we'll put you on a standard tariff for the electricity. There are no tie-ins or cancellation fees with these tariffs leaving you free to switch without penalty at any time.

Just a quick heads up. If you let us have meter readings for the day you take over, we'll make sure your account is set up correctly.

I know moving can be a stressful time so, if you make a quick note of the readings, you can let us have them later when you've a bit more time.

Hope this is useful Alan. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

As the Eon rep has posted, as they are the existing supplier to the new home you should inform them of your occupation and Elec meter reading on the day you move in, but it's not an If, it's a Must

The same goes for Brit Gas
