Really weird HPI check from the AA - can anyone decipher?

I just did a car data check via the AA for a car that we're interested in. I usually use autocheck but it couldn't find the plate so I used the AA instead as I wanted a site that checked for outstanding finance.

Anyway, the report is confusing as hell. I've added the pertinent parts below:
Alert Details

Plate Transfer

The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 17/05/2012
--05--- was applied to this vehicle on 04/02/1963
This VRM has been recorded as being written-off
The insurance write-off was recorded on 05/07/2010 against a MINI MINI COOP

Vehicle Ownership
There are many circumstances where the 'owner' of a vehicle is not the 'keeper' as recorded on the DVLA V5C document. These circumstances are described in more detail in the notes accompanying each alert register.

Police stolen - VRM not currently recorded by the police as stolen
Insurance theft - VRM not currently recorded by insurers as a theft
Outstanding finance - VRM not currently recorded as having outstanding finance
Security watch - VRM not currently recorded as at risk on the security register
Plate transfer - Interest registered against a previous plate

Vehicle Condition

Condition alert - VRM not recorded by insurers as a 'total loss'
Condition inspected - VRM not recorded as a repaired insurance 'total loss'

So confused. How could an '05' plate be applied to a car in 1963? Why does it first say it's been written off and then says there's no record of it being written off. The car's got a vanity plate on it at the moment that the seller wants to keep but that shouldn't mess things up like this should it?

some details sometimes get lost in translation like 05 and 1963
i would be asking why plate change only 4 months ago
is this write off relating to this number plate or is it related to this car and they were trying to hide the fact
more importantly why are they selling the car?
six owners auto and private sale?
    mm

clear as cheese that print off isnt it
  • Someone at the DVLA has messed up. I assume you are talking about a 2005 car (new shape BMW mini) and not a classic mini.

Anyway the car was written off so often best to walk away unless you know what you are getting into, and the car is at least 1/3 cheaper than market value, also the mileage doesn't add up. 45,000 in 2007 and only 23,000 in 2008.

Maybe the private plate was first issued in 1963 which is how the DVLA have got mixed up?

It would be helpful to know what the car is. You can transfer any plate you own to any car you own. From what you have posted it could be a 1963 mini with a 2005 vanity plate or a 2005 mini with a 1963 vanity plate.

From your quote above you say you did a check on the plate, if the plate is different to the cars original plate it could throw up all sorts of problems as the search may get data from several cars.

Best to do a check on the VIN number instead as this should be unique to the car and doesn't change.

Didnt think you could change the plate to a newer reg so it must be a 2005 with a 1963 plate

Yes, just sounds like a personal plate has been transferred to the new vehicle. If it's from the 60's, it's likely the owner has transferred it to every car he's owned over the years.

Presumably the owner will want to remove the 60's plate if you buy it and transfer the original 2005 Mini reg.
