  • I think what you need to realise is that this charge is issued automatically regardless of the amount, and that there isn't a sad little man in an office at Tesco headquarters with a perverted lust for adding charges on to peoples credit accounts.

unfortunately you fell below the line, and it automatically charged you.

to be fair , if you have used your account very well in the past without any other charges usually card companies will give you a 1st time removal as a good grace. If they don't i honestly suggest you change credit card providers.

You signed a contract agreeing to these terms: you must make at least the minimum payment by the stated date. They're not fuzzy numbers, they're very exact. You can't take a "close enough" attitude and expect to get away with it.

It saddens me that society has so undervalued the value of our words and agreements. People want everything to be subject to appeal and to be fluffy, flexible "make up your own rules" stuff. Now mistakes must be dealt with only with apologies (what use are they to creditors?) and never any real consequences. "Punishments" should only be threatened but never actually enforced. People think there should be a way to talk themselves out of them everything. It's part of what's so wrong with our country these days.

Tesco have stuck to their word, you should stick to yours.
This is everybody's fault but mine.

If you paid the £75 after the statement date but before the due date then you had made a payment that month. You are not required to pay off in full. If you had paid off £75 and left 19p all your would be charged is a small amount of interest.
Note however that the OP said the AMOUNT DUE was £75.19. If this was the minimum payment, then surely this is indeed a 'Failure to pay' and would incur a £12 charge.

If the total statement value was £75.19, then yes, only interest would be payable.

I got caught out by Tesco credit card a couple of months back when I forgot to pay in time (no, all of the "it's your fault!" donuts kindly keep your irrelevant judgemental comments to yourself ); I called them to see if they would waive the £12 as I have been a good customer over the years and haven't missed a payment, but they wouldn't budge.
I guess they think that are better than their customers.

Oh please, it's not irrelevant and it's not judgemental, it's the truth. It is their fault for paying late, nobody else's, and they should accept responsibility for it.

Being a good customer and making the payments on time each month means you don't pay late fees that month, it shouldn't have to mean you won't pay late fees when you do pay late. Tesco don't think they're better than their customers, they just think if their agreement says that a £12 late fee is charged for late payments and their customers sign that agreement, then a £12 fee should be charged for late payments. They mean what they say, and so should their customers.

I don't say this because I think I'm better or I don't make mistakes, I say it because I recognise the mistakes I do make will rightly have consequences. I don't feel I'm above those consequences or should be able to talk myself out of them. Too often people think consequences are there to be threatened but should be withdrawn with a quick "I'm sorry", but it's not the reality.

  • This could have been avoided, Direct Debit for the min payment should always be set up for credit cards in my opinion.

I hope the op wasn't on a introductory rate, it could be taken away now due to the late payment.

I agree it was the fault of the OP, Tesco have every right to charge the late payment fee.
  • I have a Tesco card, I was paying a fixed amount well over the minimum payment by direct debit every month but due to an error by Tesco Bank when I tried to revert to paying the balance in full, I ended up with a late payment charge. Tesco 'forgot' to take the direct debit.

I requested the change immediately after a payment had been made and just before a new statement was issued. I received emails confirming everything, telling me it would take about 10 days to be changed. No problem I thought. Wrong!! I had a letter mid August telling me it would take 10 days to change which was well ahead of any due payment. It said I was to continue paying by my usual method. That was direct debit, they forgot, charged me so I called them and asked what was going on.

They refunded the late payment charge as it had been their fault but I did make a complaint. I am going to make another complaint now as I just received a default notice letter dated after a letter acknowledging my complaint. I know these things are sent out automatically but Tesco employees should have stopped this before it was sent. They had the details well in advance of this letter being generated, there's absolutely no excuse for this. Not impressed by their service

I made a similar mistake many years ago. The charge of £12 is standard across the industry for late payments, missed payments and exceeding credit limits.

I took the charge on the chin, and got on with my life - but the most important thing, is I have made sure never to make the same mistake again. If you learn the same valuable lesson, it will be to your benefit in the long-run.

It's not the end of the world, and as already said by other participants in this thread, you signed a contract, and when you sign a contract, you, and the other parties, agree to abide by, and respect the terms of that contract. You have breached your contractual obligations, and the other party has abided by their contractual obligation in levying the charge. Sometimes a polite call to customer services will help to get the charge removed, but not with all providers. They shouldn't be considered a "bad" provider, simply because they by the terms of the contract the contract you, and them signed.
