So if Audacity can open ALAC it can go ALAC to FLAC but you can't end up with ALAC from another format, you would have to use another program like iTunes to end up with ALAC
.
Now I'm really confused.....
Imported CD into iTunes, using 'Apple Lossless' format and it saves each track as an .m4a file. I can open these in Audacity and export as .flac. I can then open that .flac file and export as .m4a, but the resulting file size is roughly 1/6th that of the original m4a fileHow do I add a signature?0 -

That's because the .m4a export from Audacity is in lossy AAC not in Apple Lossless, they both use the same .m4a container but the files are completely different.0 -
Ahhhhhh right. Nothing like keeping it simple, eh!How do I add a signature?0

Update: I am now the proud owner of a WDTV Live Hub

If I rip music as .flac files, can EAC automatically add album artwork? How do I add a signature?0 -
No I don't think EAC can add artwork, for flac files I use Mp3tag to add the artwork, you can have it automatically find and tag with it's Amazon search feature but I have always done it manually with art I found myself (mainly so I could get high quality artwork)0

I discovered that EAC can add artwork automatically, and I've spent the last few evenings ripping the first 20 or so CDs to flac format.
However, I appear to have a problem with the WDTV Live Hub as, when I select Music from the menu bar at the bottom the library starts to load and after 20-30 seconds the hub reboots.
Have copied everything off, reformatted the disc and copied everything back - same result. I'm beginning to suspect it may be crashing whilst loading album art.
Any ideas?How do I add a signature?0 -
As suspected the crashing appears to have been caused by one of two causes - the size of album artwork files (at least one was over 5 meg) or special characters used in the name of the files.
I've made the files smaller(max 1000x1000 pixels @ 80% quality) and edited the names. The hub now loads the library, but very slowly. There are only 23 albums on the disk. I'm going to try removing the artwork completely to see if this is the cause
Also wondering whether a firmware update could be causing this. I was prompted to update this shortly after I connected it to the network. Wondering if it's possible to roll back to the earlier version. How do I add a signature?0 -
You can apparently downgrade the firmware but I have no idea if that would fix the problem, when I first got my WD TV it would build the library aOK when using an external HDD but it was also slow, but that was before I switched to network file shares and also before I started upgrading the album art files in anticipation for my iPad and it's retina display.0
