Underfloor heating mats in a bathroom? Are they effective?

How effective are electric underfloor heating mats?

We need to heat a 8ftx5ft bathroom and wondered if underfloor heating would be adequate? I have asked in B&Q etc and some salesmen say it's excellent, while others say it doesn't really heat a room?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure I would say it heats a bathroom...rather that it just takes the chill off the tiles as you walk on them....but then again I wouldnt really say that a heated towel rail is an effective form of heating either, thats good for drying damp towels!

We had it in our small bathroom (2m x just under 2m). Brilliant for walking on but not great for room heat. We needed a rad too.

    Ours was a Warmup version.

A lot more expensive to run than anticipated. We had a prepayment card meter and it added a fiver a week when we had it on.

they can be, but you'll need the 200w version or above.

you also have to remember that you don't tend to have a lot of floorspace in a bathroom as its mostly taken up with fittings, if you have a small bathroom its best avoided or treated as a secondary heat source, unless you in a modern, very well insulated house.

For practical purposes I think all electric heaters are 100% efficient (if an expensive way of heating - after all most of the energy 'wasted' by appliances is in the form of heat) so whether they are effective will depend on the wattage. If they are effective, they'll be expensive to run unless your room is very well insulated...
