Royal Mail Compensation for lost item

I sold something on Ebay, which I posted on the 10th September, to Denmark. The buyer has informed me today that the item has not been received yet, so I'm going to refund if it doesn't arrive if the next few days.
The item sold for more than I originally paid for it, but has a higher retail value, than the buyer paid. If that makes any sense! My question is, if I am able to get compensation from Royal Mail for the loss of this item, then will I get the amount I sold it for on Ebay back, or what I originally paid?

Private sellers should get what the item sold for. Use the ebay page to make the claim. RM assume that nothing second hand sells for more than was paid for it.0

I made a claim over a year ago and RM asked for proof of what I Sold it for. I'm not a business seller. Best to check RM website for details.0

Royal Mail won't allow you to claim until 25 working days from posting, if you can get the buyer to hold out until the 10th of Oct I'd say it will have arrived by then.
If they are eager for a refund then ask if they wouldn't mind letting you know if it arrives after refunding so you can re-invoice (I usually offer to cut the postage from this as good will), international customers tend to be very patient and honest so hopefully you won't need to claim.
Royal Mail should pay you the market value which as a private sale should be classed as the sale price plus the postage you paid (up to a limit of £46).In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0
