Been offered a job, need advice/help

Ive been offered a job with a new Morrisons that's being built at the moment. I was hoping for full time but they have offered me 15.5 hours pw.

There is no way am i turning this offer down BUT i have a mortgage and the usual bills to pay. I'm on JSA at the moment, so if this stops once i start working is there anything else i can claim?

Thank you

    watch them,

Check you get holidays for overtime upto full time equivilent

They probably have every one on short hours but plan to have you working more on the cheap.
  • Strange you should say that, at the interveiw they did say ' if we can't offer you full time what is the least ammoount of hours you'd do', it seems many places are now doing this.

Doesn't 15.5 hours mean you can still claim JSA or at least in theory even if you'd get nil? Does that mean you can get other benefits? It just seems odd that they are keeping it just under the magic 16 hours.

    Thanks t0rt0ise

Just been looking, yes i could still claim jsa but was really hoping i could come of that and hold my own but not on 15.5 hours i can't :(.

If i still claimed JSA obviously i'd still have to be activley looking for work.

  • At 15.5 hours you'd have hardly any JSA left. If you could get over 16 hours (over 60, disabled or caring for children) would you be eligible for tax credits? You might also get a Job Grant of £100 for single people and couples without children, £250 for lone parents and couples with children when you come of JSA, and housing benefit etc may have a 4-week run on period.

Its so they can ask staff on a day by day basis if anyone can do any OT on the day, my contract is a low number but ive done a mixture of hours from 1 week to the next. What you can do is make it known to your manager to start with that if theres any OT going you might be interested if it fits in with your plans.
  • You only get holiday pay based on your contract hours too. I worked 3 months doing 39 hours a week but only got contract hours worth of holiday pay when I had holiday half way through.
  • Have you tried putting the details through a benefitchecker? Martin has one on here somewhere I think and turn to us do one. Might give you an idea?

They wanted me to do 39 hours a week every week but didn't want to up my contract to 39 hours. That was the problem.
