USB external hard-drive

Hi all

I've got a bit of an odd problem with a USB external hard-drive.
The computer can see the drive (it appears in Windows Explorer) and you can see the files, but you can't do anything with them (i.e. open or copy them, haven't tried deleting them as yet).

I've checked the permissions on the drive and they all seem fine (i.e. no read-only restrictions).

Anyone any ideas?

  • where did they come from, another windows pc? the reason I ask is have you checked all the permissions like ownership and folder permissions are correct ... sometimes it doesn't always stand out clearly.

The drive has been attached to the same machine for months.
It's only decided not to work correctly in the last few days.

Yes, constantly on (barring power-failures which we haven't had).
Tried powering it down and swapping USB ports and still no joy.

What version of windows are you using ?
    Try this..

In power management (Control Panel) go into the advanced details of your power scheme and alter the settings which power-down your hard drive and USB interfacing to save energy - this will mean your device is kept running and is permanently detectable....

Booler - yes, with the same problems.

21Twinkle - It's actually Windows Server 2003. I'll try altering the power settings but the drive has it's own power supply so I don't know if that will make a difference.
