hijack this log

Hoping you knowledgeable folks can help "again".

My pc is SO slow, i switched on this morning at 0630 and have only just managed to get on here with a hijack log at 0710.

It takes ages to boot, seems to take ages to load XP and then when loaded it takes ages to load a browser and even then most times it stops responding straight away.

after loading hijack this, even that stopped responding 3 times before I got the log

Nothing found only a query about if or what firewall you`re using.

Nothing particularly concerning in the log, but a few bits for you to start with.....

    1. check in avast that you don't have a boot-time scan scheduled for every day.

    2. Open CCleaner, go to Tools > Startup, and set everything bar avast to disabled.

    3. Open IE, go to tools, manage add-ons, and disable them all.

4.do you have windows set to automatically download & install updates? If so, in control panel, change this to notify you but not to download & install automatically.

reboot the machine and see how it behaves - time each section of the startup, i.e. how long on BIOS screen, how long to welcome screen, and etc.

You missed the important figure - Physical memory 1GB?

Was there any chkdsk or virus scanning going on at boot?

uninstall google toolbar, disable adobe flash player update service using services.msc on top of Gunjacks suggestions.

make sure you disable dropbox from startup using msconfig.

Tick and fix this in hijackthis

    install cleanmem

    run

    chkdsk c: /R

(which will check the disk for errors at the next boot)

A newer version of service pack is available. Service packs increase the safety of your system. Visit Microsoft's windowsupdate site to download the newest version of the service pack.

It seems that you don't use an anti-virus scanner or your scanner is not active. Only an anti-virus scanner can protect you against new viruses. You can look here for a good anti-virus scanner.
    firewall.gif
We couldn't detect any active process of a firewall on your system. Possible reasons:
(1.) You are using the windows firewall or a hardware firewall.
(2.) You are using a firewall of an unknown vendor.
(3.) You are using a firewall, but for unknown reasons it is disabled
(4.) You don't use any firewall at all.
We recommend you to use a firewall. Download and install one or activate windows xp´s own one. In case you got questions or you want us to add the firewall you use to our database, contact us at our forum.

    changed as advised
reboot the machine and see how it behaves - time each section of the startup, i.e. how long on BIOS screen, how long to welcome screen, and etc.

    didnt make any difference

    physical memory

    total 1047856

    available 660500

    cache 356800

Was there any chkdsk or virus scanning going on at boot?

yes it did try once, i left virus checker running last night and woke up to find the bios screen displayed, on reboot it tried to run chdsk but froze

uninstall google toolbar, disable adobe flash player update service using services.msc on top of Gunjacks suggestions.

unistalled google toolbar still to disable adobe update

make sure you disable dropbox from startup using msconfig.

    done

Tick and fix this in hijackthis

    install cleanmem

    done

    run

    chkdsk c: /R

(which will check the disk for errors at the next boot)

tried that and it ran through stage 1, checking files ok,but then it got to stage 2 checking indexes and appeared to have stopped working as it stayed on 0% for about 15 minutes, so I killed the power to reboot:(, had it stopped or was I being impatient ?

Being WAAAYYYY too impatient, chkdsk can take a few hours to run through all 5 stages....set it off and go watch telly or read a book ;)

Got a data backup, and a windows disc (or factory restore partition)?

You need to address the chkdsk issue before looking elsewhere, it could be nothing, or a corruption, or possible more serious (HD problem). Resetting in the middle of it doing things is a good way of causing hd corruption.

I let chdsk run and when I next looked it had booted up so guesing it was ok,still took ages to boot this morning though. It was about 12 minutes from switching on to being able to start a browser.that is much quicker than yesterday though

I will back up data but dont have a windows disc

Avast and AVG have been known to cause issues.

I use Windows Essential security anti virus which is free and I`ve had no problems.
