excess mileage in previous years

Another question if you don't mind :) I cannot sleep at the moment so it seems like as good a time as any to take care of the paperwork :D

Since I bought and insured my car 5 years ago, I always had my mileage as 10k/year (estimate). However, looking back at my various MOTs mileage, in 2010 and 2011, I drove between 40k and 50k each year

I am still within my 10k limit though for this year (different circumstances which they are aware about)

My renewal is coming in 4 days time: do I have to let them know and retrospectively pay for the excess mileage for 2010 and 2011? What impact is it likely to have on my next premium? I just want to prepare myself mentally if you think the premium will rocket :(

In any case, I will up my mileage estimate on my next policy, just to be on the safe side! My circumstances could change again and I really don't want to have to stress about that!!

    It's an estimated mileage.
    I wouldn't tell them.
If you do, they would probably try to charge more than the cars worth in back dated premium, and if you didn't pay would threaten to cancel your present insurance.

If you do make a claim, even if they see your present MOT, this year the mileage will be correct.

Shop around for insurance, you will find a much cheaper price than the renewal normally.
(And also sever any history for the car)

I checked on comparison websites, and when I compare like for like, DL comes out £100 cheaper than other companies :( Or is there something that I am doing wrong?

I have not slept AT ALL. I calculated that on average, per year, from the 1st day I had the car, we drove 26.3k miles per year  How much is it going to cost me :sigh:

If you're currently with DL, just take out cover on the correct mileage or ask them to renew on the correct new mileage.

If they did ask about it (Very unlikely they will) just tell them your mileage will be higher in future.

People's jobs or the mileages they do for their jobs frequently change so it's not a big issue at this stage

Well I would certainly increase the milage for next year....

It has been noted on some bike forums that ins co's are now asking for MOT certs to check milage. Quite how that will work with the new white ones I don't know. But a ins co would have access to the online checker to see what milage is being made.
Also increasing milage does not always mean higher costs. Mine went down when doubling my annual milage.

I would not worry about previous years. Just make sure that you cover yourself in the future and don't give a ins co a easy out.

  • Thanks guys. I will of course put my mileage at 30k, even though I am almost certain it'll be far less than that, but just to be on the safe side.

It's just I know I'll be paranoid every time we drive now :sigh: I'm usually the type of person who likes doing things by the book and check everything over and over again. And I let myself down big time this time :(
  • I'm sorry for bumping this thread again but I feel really guilty :o

Can any of you with insider knowledge tell me how much I would be likely to pay if I were to call DL and tell them I drove on average 26k miles per year instead of the 10k over the last 4 years?
  • How longs a piece of string... Phone them and ask is the only way to find out for sure,

I think the difference between 10k estimated and 40k sounds more like non disclosure than oops i did more miles than expected.

Do some virtual quotes online with both figures and you will see.

I just called them and upped my mileage to 28k on my renewal quote. It added roughly £100 to it, so not much in the grand scheme of things. :) We probably won't drive that much as our circumstances have changed but now I won't have to worry :)
