car Insurance information

Options
Not sure if this is the right forum (if not would appreciate if someone could point me to the right one)

Back in 2010 a car reversed into me, as it was the slightest actual contact and there was no damage we agreed not to involve the insurance company's
however as the car drove off I noticed a hire company sticker on the back of the car, so fearing a possible later claim saga I decided to inform my car insurance company (how I wish I never bothered)

now I informed my insurance company of what happened and I clearly stated I was not making a claim, just informing them should any future problems arise, little did I know the problems would end up being mine

once my insurance was up for renewal, I went for another company (cheaper price etc) however on my proof of no claims etc, they listed the incident I mentioned above, even though no claim by either party was ever made by either party.
now at the time and after a lengthy saga and a number of phone calls/emails. they eventually changed the information from a Non fault claim to state for information only

No I assumed after a lengthy saga this information had been deleted from my file, as it never showed up on my next insurance policy, or the following one

Now I have taken out a new policy with the previous firm, and yes you have guessed my problem, they still have this information listed, I have contacted them and they are refusing point blank to remove the information from my file

is there anything I can do

any advice would be appreciated, Thanks

  • Do they have it listed as a claim or for info only?

If the latter it is accurate, so why should it be removed?

If the former do you have any documentation where they confirmed they would alter it to an information only note?
    Thinking critically since 1996....

No, you can't have the information removed. Like or not you had an accident and you're contractually obliged to inform any insurer of all previous accidents for a set period, usually 4-5 years. You may not have made any claim but you are still now a higher risk and your future premiums will reflect this.

You should really post this on the Motoring forum but you'll likely get the same response.

    Thanks for reply,
originally it was listed as a Non fault claim, much to my annoyance as no claim was ever made by either party

after a saga, it was changed to "for information only"

now I assumed it had been deleted/removed, as my next two insurance company's did not list this at all

as I was the innocent party and no claim was ever made I wanted this removed, the actual person who reversed into me, is probably driving round without any information on his file, yet he was the guilty party

hence I (the innocent party) wanted this removed/deleted

It's just how the insurance industry works. Any accident, fault or not, increases the risk.
  • Insurers dont worry about the "how" but simply the fact that statistically they see that the more accidents someone is involved in (irrespective of fault) the more likely they are to be involved in more accidents.

Whilst in prior accidents the TP may have been at fault, known and insured that isnt to say the next one isnt going to be.

It can be the case you have on street parking at home but its a boy racer area at night and hit & runs are common to parked cars. Your work car park could be terrible with tiny spaces leading to lots of accidents. You may have to go down a country lane to town which is prone to icing in winter.

From initial underwriting questions these sorts of things are typically undetectable but become evident each time you submit a new claim for a "hit whilst parked" etc... next time the fault driver may not stop to give their details.

Obviously because OP forgot to deactivate his cloak of invisibility. We all have them, haven't you noticed, when people pull out in front of you on roundabouts and the like, it's because it's active.

I think this thread can be closed as his thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4196239 contains all the answers to his problem.
