Lovefilm - Fraudulent activity or taking money unauthorised?

Years ago, I used Easy-Cinema (or whatever it was called - a pay as you order DVD postal rental thing, one of that Stellios blokes'companies)
I had one CD and gave up, and haven't used it since 2007.
I got two emails yesterday from lovefilm. The first telling me I'd topped up 4 credits or £8.66, and the second telling me that my card had been rejected. The details told me that its expiry date was 2007.
I'd not been near any DVD rental place for years, so today I've tried to call LoveFilm - concerned by a possible fraudulent activity.
After a few emails, and numerous calls - they answered. That was a frustrating time - a call to Lovefilm tells you that you'll be in the queue for 3 minutes, then after a couple of of minutes makes you leave a message.
It turns out that Easy Cinema is now owned by LoveFilm.
Eventually I got through, and I've been told that at the weekend, they had 'unscheduled maintenance' (we call them FAULTS!), and this is PROBABLY why this happened.
I pointed out -
"PROBABLY", when someone is trying to use my account, is not good enough.
If their system is taking money out of peoples' accounts (that are closed, I might add) then that is very bad. The guy I spoke with had no further explanation.
That is particularly bad - how many people has this happened to?

All I'll say is that if you use LoveFilm, check your statement very closely!

  • Good advice, thanks. :)
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • I've had exactly the same happen yesterday, yet they're telling me it was my fault for switching the PS3 on which reactivated an account which was only 'suspended, not cancelled'.

    £12.26 in my case.
  • I've had exactly the same thing - £30.49 taken from my account from a card which expired last year. They've promised a refund but I'm not sure how they managed to get the payment through in the first place - I might need to ask my bank a few questions as well. It seems they've had a big glitch in their system as I haven't used the account for a couple of years.
  • I've been having lots of problems with LoveFilm this past two weeks. Fortunately, all payments have been OK (so far) but I've had problems with them sending out disks etc. I wonder after reading this thread if they have had an issue with their system which has caused all these problems.
