Main driver change and NCD

I have a 5 year NCD as the policy holder and main driver on my car insurance.
My husband has also been a named driver for the past 5 years (and no claim).
If we chose to put him down as the main driver so he can start earning a NCD, would I lose my own NCD? Say we want to buy another car in a few years time, would I be able to say I have a 5 year NCD or would I have to start from scratch again?
Or can only a policy holder ear a NCD? We're with DL if that helps.
This all "main driver" thing is a nightmare when a husband and wife are using the same car without either one being a clear "main driver" of said car! :rotfl:

Some insurers give you a year while others give you 2 years before your NCD becomes invalid. (Check with the insurer before you buy the policy.)
This means you and your husband could swap main driver status every year on the car.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Do you mean buy a replacement car or another car?
Some companies allow a discount on a second car bought by a named driver under the first policy.. Privilege gave my wife a full NCD when we bought a second car,and insured it with her as proposer and main driver. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Yes, we would replace the car (we only need one, so no second car involved)
I called DL to up my mileage and asked how much it'd be to put my husband as the main driver. Because he is my spouse, we still have the NCD.But we still have to pay £40 if he is the main driver for some strange reason... (no convictions or claim or anything) But I believe he'll drive the car more than me anyway, if only when we go and visit my family abroad. So best to be safe

Men still get discriminated against by insurance companies just for being men, hence the £40!0

Although he is now the main driver he is still a named driver and will only accrue NCD according to your insurers rules for named driver.
Being a main driver does not change the NCD position. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

It is all the more unfair that he is by far a much better driver than me. Not that I am dangerous (I don't speed or things like this), but he is just a better driver.Although he is now the main driver he is still a named driver and will only accrue NCD according to your insurers rules for named driver.

I see! So he would have to be the policy holder then to accrue NCD that could be transferable to another insurance provider? This is a little complicated... Say we were to change insurance provider next year: I would still apply for the policy (as I'm the registered keeper) using my NCD, but having him as main driver could put our premium up then (given that he won't have any NCD under his belt as I think the Named Driver discount is not transferable in between companies from what I read online...)
Mind you, it is very hard to know exactly who is the main driver. We did an estimate before changing my renewal quote and although I drive more often, he tends to do the long distance trips. But it's hard to know in advance!0
