Transferring money

I want to transfer (online) some money from my bank account to a Santander savings account - not a regular thing, just a one-off. But I'm asked for a sort-code & my savings account doesn't have one. How can I set it up? Even if I try to do it as a standing order I'm asked for sort code & I haven't got one! How am I supposed to pay money into the account?

Your account will have a sort code. Is it an online account or a regular account? Do you have online access to your account? Have you spoken to Santander, plenty of FREE 0800 numbers to call them on.

I have an esaver account with Santander and it does not have a sorting code number or account number (it was previously an Alliance & Leicester account).

To credit the account from another bank you need to 'pull it in’ by way of a direct debit.

If you think this is the same type, open the Santander Account and click the Payment and Transfers tab along the top menu. You'll then see on the left hand menu another link called 'Pull Money in from an External Account’. I feel sure that when I opened the account a good few years ago I had to add an external servicing account (as I had no other A & L accounts at that time) and you may have too when yours was opened. If you can now see a servicing account simply type in how much you want transferred from the external account and it does it. Funds usually take a day or two to be credited.

If you haven't set up the feeder account then you need to obtain a form to nominate one. Call them on 0845 600 4388 and they’ll post it to you.

Logan112, how much interest (in AER terms) does that Santander savings account pay you? How much better could you do with a different account, may be at a different bank?
  • Do you just have a savings account with Santander, or do you have a current account with them too? Have you operated the savings account online? If I wanted to pay money into my Santander savings account (I have one that used to be A&L as well as an original Santander savings a/c), then I'd transfer the money to the Santander current a/c online and then do an instant transfer between the accounts. Generally when you want to transfer money into savings accounts, it's easy to do it via current accounts. I have a number of current accounts that just sit empty and I just use them to transfer in and out of savings accounts. I remember years ago struggling with A&L account numbers, as they always had an extra confusing number compared to everyone else. If in doubt though, ring the bank.
  • Nationwide's sort codes are a bit strange too - i think they're related to the type of product you have rather than the branch - i tried to transfer some money to my mum's nationwide account once and it went completely missing.
