Hi,

I'm currently with British Gas and on the Price Cap 2012 for both my Gas and Electricity. I have been offered by them to move over Fixed Price Plan May 2014.

I'm happy to fix but I'm not sure whther this is the right fix for me. What is "Standing charge"?

I like being able to pay using variable monthly direct debit, submitting my reading on my iphone and managing my account online.

Electricity :
Payment typeTier 1Tier 2Night RateDirect Debit-VDD
25.130
10.417

Gas:
Payment typeTier 1Tier 2Night RateDirect Debit-VDD
7.998
3.664

'Standing Charge' is a daily fee to collect the Annual Service charge, the other option is a No Standing Charge tariff where a fixed number of Units you use each year are charged at a higher price, which appears to be the type of tariff you have now

I am puzzled your use of the words NIGHT RATE in your headings - To have a Night Rate on Elec you have to have ECO7 metering, and there is no such thing for gas - Maybe it's something in BG's tariff titleing

BG are rarely the lowest cost supplier. Ask BG for your annual Gas & Elec Kwh consumption figures and put them into a couple of Switch sites to compare what BG are offering
  • I just switched to this last night, not sure if it was such a great idea now.

so confused with all the options , didn't know about not having a standard charge and paying a higher rate for units used, surely better for low users of electricity?

Martin's article says if you don't want to do fixed price right now, wait until the big 6 have all announced their price increases as you may switch then find your new provider increases the price.

fix now or stick if you want a variable deal.

  • Price changes vary not just by company, but by region, and there can be huge variations
