Do I need to declare To Travel Insurers

Hi Im off on holiday in the next few weeks with my hubby and kids to Turkey. I booked the travel insurance in August but since then my hubby has been admitted to hospital with diverticulitis and a hole in the bowel. He was given antibiotics and discharge after 5 days. He is awaiting a scan to check that all is ok but feels fine! My question is do I need to tell the travel insurance company about this before we go ? He was fit and healthy before we booked.:undecided

  • I would say yes, otherwise if you don't they'll only find out from perusal of his medical records after all the money has been spent treating him (should the worst happen), which would then leave you with total responsibility for all treatment received.

Odds are they would exclude treatment for this pre-existing condition. But you never know.

As a get you out of jail card, this is worth looking into for treatment of emergencies, but is not a substitute for actual travel insurance.

Check the policy wording on whether any conditions developing after inception of the policy need to be advised prior to departure.

At worst, if they won't cover this condition should any treatment be necessary then they should allow you to now cancel the trip (if you don't want to risk travelling uninsured for this) and pay your cancellation charges.
