Fed up of these sellers

I have become disillusioned with ebay.Today I won an item ,Iwas the only bidder.10 minutes after I won the item I recieved a message saying my bid had been retracted without a reason being given.I know the reason,I won the item for 50p.This the 3rd time in recent weeks this has happened to me,the other times the reason given was no longer available. What a farce, again I was the only bidder so obviously
the seller wanted more so why didn`t they put a higher starting price?
Why does ebay allow this,It has really put me off and I have been buying and selling for many years on ebay but I don`t want to bother anymore.

The seller is allowed to do anything they please with their auctions until it ends with a winning bidder. eBay do not allow a seller to muck winners about.

If you actually won the item for 50p, pay, then if they don't complete the sale by sending anything and refund you, report as a non-performing seller, decline any cancellation and leave appropriate feedback. If they don't refund you, then claim for INR when you can through Paypal.

  • I've had this happen a few times recently as well, again on low value items. I think it is a result of free listing weekends, where people think lets list x,y,z then when it doesn't generate interest they don't want to complete the sale. I've had sellers try and increase the postage after I've won and paid, which I have refused to accept, and just have to report for INR.

If you list an item at 99p you must be prepared to sell it for 99p. Its not the buyers fault that your listing doesn't generate interest, more so if a typo is present.

Not really sure what can be done, if I purchase something and they say its no longer available then you just have to accept that at face value.

The one I did have recently that probably was genuine was the purchase of IP phones, the seller claimed to have listed incorrectly, i.e. model numbers, I didn't want the ones they claimed to have (lower value and older), but the ones they claimed were incorrect. The seller did relist with the model number I didn't want so it looked like an actual error in the orginial listing. I got a full refund as you would expect.

There is an awful lot that can be done - see my post above ^^^.

How is a bid retracted AFTER the auction ends ?

Do you mean you were winning and your bid was removed - or you won?

It's fairly annoying as a buyer, but I'd rather Ebay didn't get involved in every 50p transaction, the fees they'd need to charge would be horrendous and close them down within a week at most.

I don't follow this. If you won the auction, your eBay account will show that you won the item and that you should pay for it.

Are you sure it wasn't the seller telling you the bid was retracted after the auction, rather than eBay?

If your eBay account shows that you won the auction, make a paypal payment for it, then ball is in the court of the seller to send you the item ... or refund you and expect appropriate feedback for messing you about.

See, I don't get that. If it's a free listing weekend then you may as well list it at a higher price to start with since there's no fee if it doesn't sell. I sometimes think sellers think they're being clever offering the lower price to generate interest and hope for a bidding war. Thing is, you can tell roughly 48 hours before the auction ends that it's not going to go so high if there's only one or two watching it.. so just end it and try again another time if that's the case!

Could it have been that they auction had a reserve on it? Would that make a difference?

  • Is there anything in the email that tells you the time the bid was cancelled compared to the item ending time?

I'm guessing that the seller has cancelled the bid in the last few minutes of the auction and that email telling you this has arrived a few minutes after the auction end.

Would annoy me too, but not much you can do.
