Scrap or sell?

Options
Hello,

I just bought a new car to replace my 51 plate VW Golf, but not sure what to do with the Golf?

It's got a number of niggly problems which could be fixed if someone could be bothered, but not sure I want the hassle of selling it.

Here are the problems:

Chip in the windscreen (never got around to getting this fixed)
Glove box catch broken
Engine warning light on (despite being serviced recently)
"think" there may be a head gasket issue
Shocks gone on the back.

Should I just scrap it? Seems a shame really! It has MOT til Jan 13, and is taxed. I keep horses so the interior is not spotless!

Thanks

Melanie

    Here's one suggestion.

Go to Cartakeback.com. Get a quote to scrap it then stick it on ebay with a list of the issues but a starting price of the scrap value. Bet someone emails you offering more than scrap value.

That's what I did and got way over the scrap value

Golfs have a dedicated following and it would have to be crushed to a cube to be just worth scrap value. Get it on autotrader with lots of bright pictures, an honest and detailed description price it at £995 and get a stick to beat off the hordes.

The car doesn't sound that bad -- it would be viable even if it was a Daewoo in all honesty.

As it's a VW, agree with colino, plenty of value left in it. Most of the faults seem fairly trivial -- the chip on the windscreen might even be repairable for free.
  • Fab, thank you for your replies. Yes, does make sense to give it a good clean and advertise it (with an honest description).

Thought it would be a shame for it to be crushed into cube!

    Thanks again :-)
  • Someone somewhere will want it for something. If you don't want the hassle and aren't fussed about the money, you could always gift it to someone on your local freecycle instead.

    clean it
write up a good descriptive advert
    and stick it on ebay
  • Have to agree with Colino. An engineless golf of that age is worth the best part of a grand owing to the number of folk out there with an engine to put in it.
