Convert DVD (VOB files) to DivX ... easiest way with freeware?

Hi folks,
I have worked out how to possibly extract subtitles from a set of VOB files such that I now have an srt (subtitle file) for use with my final converted avi file.
My only remaining problem is to convert the decrypted VOB files to a divx format such that I can then test out my subtitle "stream" with the actual video.
So really I have sussed the complicated bit (I think) which is the subtitles stuff so I just now simply need a decent freeware (ideally) for convert VOB (ifo) to divx. (already have the codecs klite etc)
Hope this is a simple request and once I have a tested working DivX movie with selectable subtitles I can go out and buy one of these DivX players from Sainsburys (phillips 5590? - 33quid) or the LIDL silvercrest player (30quid).. Also I will look into the possibility of storing my dvds on hard disk in DivX (with subtitles) and streaming them to my XBOX360 .... [I know there is software which transcodes DivX to WMV format which the 360 can play but I am sure I will lose the subtitle stream). My other solution is to use one of the cheap DivX DVD players as mentioned above and use the USB port to connect say a 500GB HDD which has the avi and srt files on it and hopefully that may work.
My plan is still to convert my DVD collection to DivX with subtitles to Hard Drives such that I can then box up my DVDs and save some space in my small flat!!!
Hope you can help
