  • I saw the promotion and bought two greetings cards and two "gift cards", value £30, for £20.

    It was clearly displayed on the card and the posters that the expiry date was the end of this August and the assistant on the till even warned me that it was a promotion rather than a normal gift card.

    I said I needed a massive amount of stationary for my son starting secondary school and she said she was just making sure I understood it expired in a few weeks as she didn't want me to send it to someone as a birthday present or save it until Christmas.

    It's a shame the OP's till assistant wasn't so thorough, but I have to agree it's frustrating but far from being a con. I think you should try to argue that you were not dealt with correctly at the till rather than saying the whole promotion was a con. The majority of us loved it.
    It was a fab way of saving money on your back to school supplies.
